i contacted carlisle - the model is an ex-display.
and they have no other ones in the back

Well they supposedly DID have last night. They may well have sold of course!

The one on display had nothing wrong with it as far as I could see, but I wasn't looking to purchase - was looking at DVD camcorders - I would have been shot if I'd turned up with that in the back of my car!! (Yes, it would fit in mine as well!!)

I phoned up a branch and was told that there were 2 in the Currys in East Ham. I immediately phoned that branch only to be told they had only one in stock and that it was 'being repaired'.

Although I dislike the Dixons group with a passion, I must think about applying for at least a saturday job as the staff perks relating to picking up end of line bargains aren't that bad!

There's a serious problem with your maths here.

The life of the bulb in this Sony is 6,000-10,000 hours even according to the Sony manual but users have found bulb life as low as 500 hours & reality the bulb life for this type of set technology is 3,000 to 5,000 hours. Those times are also complete failure not halflife. That's nowhere near the 30,000 to 35,000 hours halflife figure for a plasma screen.

Additionally, the cost of around £400 per bulb is far from what I would call inexpensive...

Yep, RP TV's real life runtime on the sony would prolly be 4000 hours. I agree £300-£350 isn't inexpensive, but spending that every few years is cheaper than buying buying a plasma every few years. (have you seen a plasma when it gets down to the halflife? it's as much use as an RPTV without bulbs).

But I'm not arguing that RPTV's are a good buy at full price. What I'm, arguing is, at £97 it's a bargain, if in a few years when the bulbs go you decide you want another TV instead you can sell the RPTV for £100 at least, and get your new TV. In effect having a 42" TV for free for a couple of years. As someone above said, perfect for students, people on a low budget etc who want a large tv without going into debt.

We have had a Toshiba rear projection TV for 5 years now and everyone who comes to our house it amazed at the picture quality and sound. We have never had a problem with it (touch wood).

Although the next tv we buy wont be a rear projection one as they can be quite bulky I would recommend a good one to anyone. However if you pay peanuts its often peanuts what you receive - so make sure you have a good luck at it in store - view the screen at normal TV viewing levels to make sure its fit for what you want it for.

I would have thought it was worth buying the TV for £97 / £297 and then simply selling the bulb on for a profit!

You could also try to find out if the bulb in the faulty units is still working and then see if they'd sell you one at a discount price!!
    That's Numberwang!

just phoned up our local store, and he sayed they havent got one in nor have they in thier warehouse. he said it was lod stock and seemed very surprised it was on the website, bummer.
  • I rang my local Dixons (currys now??) and there are some in Torquay and Bedford. He was quite happy to check stock in various areas for me. He said there are loads of faulty or non-pristine models around, but hardly any new ones.
