didnt some guy on some other thread say that if the price ends in -97 its just a sale item going thru a sequence of reductions automatically. the system doesnt stop even when the items are long sold out0

About as limited as plasma. Not quite as bad for screen burn (but not much better either).

In store, you're absolutely right. Because in store, they have harsh lighting, the screen sin't correctly set up, the source is horrendous and about a million other factors.
I set up my brothers rear projection unit and it is crisp, clear and a superb TV. I am just gutted I have nowhere to put one of these as I'd buy one in a flash.
