HELP !!! Unknown bill

Options
I desperately need some advice please. When I switched my computer on this evening I found an MBS bill saying I owed £19. 00 for a sexxxpassport subscription today. I have never heard of them and being a 66 year old widow imagine that I would not be interested in this material, although it suggests that I visited the site today. What do I do? Ignore it, argue with them,or what. Please some-one advise me.

P.S I don't know if this is on the right site, do please move it if I have made a mistake

Thank you.

  • I googled it. I did wonder what would come up. Looks like you may have picked up some spyware. Details here

You might have had something downloaded inadvertently! It's a type of spyware. Then this bit would hook you on to that site every time you connect to Internet and there you are, paying for something you don't even know you're using.
My sister had that problem once (she loves to download music from the net and that's a moment of risk if you haven't got a good firewall or antivirus) and in the end had to take the PC to the workshop to have it properly clean.
I don't know how to help so that you don't have to pay that horrible bill, sorry.

Thanks for the information, I have never downloaded music and am at a loss to know how to get rid of it. Will I get another? Am I liable? I am very much a novice on the internet and thought I had taken all the precautions necessary.

Have you got a friend or relative that knows about these things? Get them asap to have a look at your PC.

  • There is a free clean up utility on the site I posted which may clear it. I haven't tried that one myself so I don't know how effective ( or safe) it is.

It happens to most of us sooner or later. I am pretty savvy but managed to pick up something really nasty a few months ago. How it got through a the virus checker and two firewalls I don't know!

Try installing the Lavasoft Adaware program which is free and detects and removes a lot of nasty beasties.http://www.lavasoft.com/

Don't try a manual removal yourself unless you know what you are doing.
  • Are you on dialup or broadband? Dialup can have programs install themsleves and redirect the modem to high tariff phone lines.
