I cancelled my TV license (legitimate reason) and requested refund for my already paid 2 months fees.

I was told that they refund only if full quarter remaining.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

rented flat with a 10 year old TV left there by the landlord.
It is not used. Is a TV licence mandatory?

No...Only if you use it to watch broadcast television. To be on the safe side (only for temptation's sake) if you don't use it then get rid of it. Ring the landlord and ask them to retrieve it.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

thanks for fast reply. landlord is abroad, so difficult to get it removed. It is too heavy and nowhere else to store till they return.

If an inspector comes around, how to prove it is not used?
Unplug the mains and aerial connections?!
BTW. there is also a freeview box and an old DVD player in the shelves below the TV. Both have TV tuners.

Simple way to deal with it?
Put the freeview box in a cupboard, along with the aerial cable, and if you really want to be sure put a bit of tape over the aerial inputs on the TV/DVD player.

You can still use the TV to watch DVD's/videos and play games without a licence.

I no longer watch tv, I use a pc and iplayer / 4od etc although rarely now as there is little I want to watch. I have told the tvla and after the initial thank you have heard nothing from them in 2 years.

Prior to that I had a tv licence but they took 3 months money by direct debit instead of 1, I cancelled the direct debit in protest. A guy came to the house and i opened the window rather than the door because it was evening and I didnt know who it was.

He was a bit insistent bearing in mind the tv I was denying I had was on in the room behind me and he could hear it, but we came to an arrangement whereby I completed his direct debit form and he went away happy, no prosecution, no fine!

You don't have to. It is up to them to prove it.

    I agree!

When will people realise that we should never invite in or converse with (at all) the BBCTVL inspectors, they are NOT the law!!

When you get your first BBCTVL demand letter write 'No Contract, return to sender' on it, it'll take your name out of their system. It's how I began the many years licence free :T
Customer Services - what a joke!

They have been known to behave like Police, demanding entry and inspection.

I was also told that if you have a radio, either at home or in the car, you need a license. True or false?

false, the radio licence was abolished in 1971, so no need to worry about that :)
