  • TVL states that you need a licence even when watching TV on laptop or pc. They are setting up in all the Universities telling students that they must have a TVL if watching TV on a laptop!!

Only if it is being broadcast "live". You can still watch all catch up, inc iPlayer, without a licence.

Just set up a Direct Debit to pay for my TV licence today (30 Sept), checked all my details carefully and *after* making my initial payment by card and authorising the DD, up pops my TV Licence...with an expiry date of 31 August 2011 - so for 11 months, not 12.

I did a bit of googling and belatedly realised that all new TV Licences automatically backdate to the 1st of the month. So, if I'd waited until tomorrow to set up my payments, my licence expiry would be 30 Sep 2011 and I'd be getting my full 12 months for my money. I couldn't find this information anywhere on tvlicensing.co.uk - unsurprisingly.

Even more irritatingly, I don't even need a TV Licence today - my TV is arriving tomorrow, I never stream live TV over the internet and so my licence should really start on 1 October. I was just trying to be organised and it has backfired! I've written to them to request an explanation and to change my licence dates, but I don't hold out a huge amount of hope - although I will make a formal complaint if needs be.

TV Licensing should make this information clearly available on their website or provide the licence expiry date before customers confirm payment. Or, heaven forbid, they could use a software system which starts the licence on the date of purchase and ends it 365 days later!

I know this might seem an over-the-top reaction to losing out on £12-worth of licence, but I'm on such an incredibly tight budget now that it has really ticked me off!

    Ugh - rant over!

It's the same with car tax. You have to pay for any calendar month in which you have it.
Particularly frustrating for you, though, as you don't need it until tomorrow!!
  • *UPDATE*

Just got a reply from TV Licencing to say they have now changed my licence expiry date to the 30 Sep - no arguing, no quibbles! :D

So I jumped the gun a bit with yesterday's rant :o.

However, it's definitely a good idea to keep an eye on new licence expiry dates and challenge where necessary!

Hope I've posted in a suitable place, and no this isnt one of those threads where someone tries to get out of paying it!

Anyway, am moving back in with my mum shortly out of my flat. I pay my licence by dd, its valid untill 21.12.10. My mum has a licence so I want to cancel mine.

    The website isnt very clear though;

What I'm confused about is whether I will need to pay up to 21.12.10 as it was dd or if it can just be cancelled now, as I suppose I won't have paid up the full yearly ammount.

Can anyone clarify for me what to do now, or have a contact number for them so I can ask?

i only live in the uk for 4 weeks a year and wonder how i go about 'suspending' my tv license because the property is empty?( i pay by direct debit- if that matters!)
    mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.
  • Well I googled and it turned up something that basically said you can suspend it for 4 weeks, but not from TV licensing's website.

You probably would be better cancelling it and watch "Catch up TV" (iplayer, 4oD, seesaw etc) while in the UK
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
