As long as you do not watch television as it is broadcast (watching includes recording) you do not need a licence. You can watch programmes online providing they are not being broadcast at the same time, so catch up tv is fine.0

They take your details so TV licensing can come after you if you do not have a license, you then have the pleasure of trying to convince them you do not need one.0 -
The LAW is very simple.
You must have a TV Licence if you watch or record television as it is being broadcast, from whatever source - full stop !
You do NOT need a licence to watch previously broadcast programmes on iplayer, watch DVDs or play games.
You do NOT need a licence to own a TV, you do NOT need to disconnect it from the aerial or detune it.
TV Licensing work on the principle that if everyone is browbeaten into buying a licence then their job will be easy. They send out meaningless threatening letters, their website is deliberately confusing.
TV Licensing have to prove that you are breaking the Law, you do NOT have to prove that you are not !0 -
I don't dispute moonrakerz at all, in fact this is how I understand it too. However, dont you think it is silly that you dont need a licence for iplayer/OD when a number of programmes are on OD immediatly after their live braodcast so OD is almost like a +1 channelYNWA

Hi everyone,
I called the TV Licensing team first thing this morning and they have now cancelled my TV Licensing Direct Debit with immediate effect. I have to say though, it all seems to have been to easy and I was kind of expecting to have problems in cancelling my license. I just explained to the person who took my call what I have said here, I don't watch TV, I only watch BBCi Player and that the only time I use my television is to watch DVDs or to play my X-Box which is a rarity anyway. I also said that I don't have my TV setup to receive a television signal and he simply said that my Direct Debit would be cancelled and if I ever needed a license again just call them up and that was that, surely there's something wrong here? I've heard horror stories of this company bullying and harrassing people to get licenses and to pay for them and yet they couldn't have been any nicer to me, maybe I'm just an old sceptic but I really got to thinking about this and I'm just worried I'll have problems further down the line. I'm trying to simplify my life and I've got rid of everything I don't need, landline telephone, expensive TV package, optional bills and so forth and now the only thing I'm paying every month is food shopping, gas/electricity, home insurance and my internet which is all I want to be paying anyway.0 -

And tax, NI, VAT ....................I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!0 -

This is because the Act that the TVLA are making a pig's ear of trying to police was enacted before the advent of iplayer and 4OD so doesn't take account of it.
I really wish their legal people would give their staff a course on the contents of the Act to stop them spouting bull***t all the timeThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Cancel the DD with your bank, don't trust BBC Licensing, they may not cancel it, do it yourself then you are sure!
