No Buying Toiletries in August Challenge!!!

 shamelessly copied from the June opening thread - Just realised the date !!!!
(apologies if anyone wanted to start this months off!)
Well, believe it or not, it's the 1st of August so here we go with the NEW THREAD!!
This fab challenge was set up in January 2010 by katie clampet
Here's her original challenge post:
"No buying any new toiletries, cosmetics, pefume etc... until I have used up ALL the ones I already have. I got a huge amount of (really nice) stuff for christmas but I am going to resist the urge to browse Boots, Asda, Superdrug etc, and pop another tub of cream, face scrub, shampoo or conditioner into my basket. I reckon the stuff I have will last me until possibly June. I have decided that the money I save I will put into my special holiday account.
Anyone else?"
Lots of us have taken part in the challenge over the past few months and are making great progress reducing our stashes and unnecessary/excessive spending.
Come and join us for the month of August. The more the merrier!!
Regulars ignore this, but I thought a quick resume might be helpful for newbies;
Why not add the challenge to your sig as a reminder?
How about taking a bit of time to do a stock-take and see if there are any gaps in your stash that you might need to spend on this month? Some of us set a budget for the month for essential purchases or to help with withdrawal symptoms, others like to go cold-turkey!!
Remember the challenge is about making the most of your money, enjoying your products, finding which products really suit you best and are worth buying, giving yourself a well-deserved pampering and breaking the habit of buying for the sake of buying. In money-saving tradition, it should also be about making your products l-a-s-t as long as possible ( although the temptation of using an unloved shower gel extravagently to finish it off is sometimes too much to bear!)
Brand new products ( or opened perfume) sell well on ebay
Unsuitable products can be used for other jobs (shower gel/ shampoo as handwash etc)
Some items can be returned to certain stores for exchange (for essential items or gifts!!) without a receipt
Unwanted items can be recycled as gifts or for gift hampers (saving the money you'd have spent on gifts)
Unsuitable items can be donated to charity as mentioned earlier.
It helps to avoid the places where temptation lurks for you; be it QVC, Boots, Bodyshop, the supermarket toiletries aisles, grabbit board, online toiletries browsing, seductive department store beauty counter offers etc. Remember retailers are making offers and promotions all the time, so there'll always be another deal!
Good luck all for August and remember to keep popping in for inspiration and support.
Welcome to all newbies - the more the merrier :hello:
Good Luck Girlies :j

Thank you Trudij for new thread!
Happy Birthday to Lilian for Tuesday. It's my birthday tomorrow and I've been very good and not asked for any toiletries - that must be the first time in a few years! One problem with it being my birthday month is that I always feel that I should be treating myself and I shall have to think of things other than toiletries this time around.
I went shopping yesterday, mainly to take some clothes back for a refund but, of course, I wondered into BS and Boots. I sampled some of the body butter and perfume in BS but had no intention of buying. By the time I got to Boots I was weakening and hovered for a long time around the Sanctuary/Dead Sea Source shelves. These were on 342 and I sooooo badly wanted stuff and considered using my Advantage points but somehow managed to resist.
I had planned to buy the Grazia magazine for the L'occitane shower gel freebie voucher but was very good and went into Debenhams first to check if they had any of the 75 ml Verbena shower gel in stock and to check that I could use the voucher there. They hadn't got that size and so I didn't bother to check on whether I could use the voucher and I didn't buy the mag. The voucher has to be used by 3rd August and so it is unlikely that I'd get the opportunity to use it anyway. So that was a close shave although it would have been a nice bargain.0 -

Thank you Trudij for starting us off and Happy Birthdays all round!
I'm in again this month - I have enough basic toiletries to last August (I think) with the exception of maybe needing a showergel and toothpaste at the end of the month. I also have a small stockpile of "luxury" stuff - mositurisers, scrubs, body stuff etc so don't need to buy any of that type of thing.
I have set myself a budget of just £5 for August and this is only for essentials if they run out.
I have little money until I get paid mid month (not been paid for almost 2 months now:eek:) and even then I'm trying to make what I have last as long as possible.
I'm not working in August (teacher) so I have as much time as I need to find a bargain if I desperately need anything!0 -
I'd like to join if I can, first time I've posted! list of what i have in stock to follow0

Hi everyone,
Tis August!!!
I do a buy no toiletries in August...light. In that as I've been doing this since January this year everything is now so so so much better. Thank you so much katie clampet! So I buy what I need at the best MSE time (for bonus gifts or 3 for 2) and no more. Any stashing unreasonable amounts of stuff is banned.
The greatest area of achievement was shampoo/conditioner. I'm down to one bottle of conditioner and a sachet and that's it (apart from swim bag but that's allowed). Amazing from how I started the year.
But no smugness as this is a continual addiction where Boots, the Body Shop, magazine freebies and the Grabbit board conspire against us in this battle. We will fight them on the...dressing tables!

Count me in again - I am loving this thread! :j
I still find it very hard to walk past a Bobbi Brown counter (more about that in a sec) so I plan to make a list of every Bobbi Brown shade that I have - every eyeshadow, every blusher, every lip colour, every eyeliner...
Seeing how much I have will hopefully scare me into not buying any more.
That's the plan anyhoo!
With apologies for the lengthy post, the state of play for me is as follows:(Purple denotes things I've bought in August, Red is for Usey Uppys, and Orange is for things I've swapped away

PS Bought another Bobbi Brown Palette today, I totally don't need it but I haven't bought one for over a year and felt the urge. It's not even TOTM!:o
Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Einstein0 -
I am going on a short hotel break and have been sorting out toiletries to take, mainly minis. I have really enjoyed looking through my stash - there are always more than a few things that I enjoy rediscovering. Once my toiletries are down to the bare minimum I shall miss this aspect!
I shall only need to buy boring dental floss this month. I am going to keep a note of all my UUs this month (and incomings) to highlight to myself how much progress I am making.0 -
This is my first time for this challenge but count me in!
Last month I challenged myself not to buy magazines but this month I'm determined to stay away from the toiletry aisles in the shops. I figured joining a thread might help me stick to the challenge.

Hi count me in again this month. Planning to only buy shampoo for ds as that is about to run out but absolutely nothing for myself as I have nothing needing replacing and if it does I have at least one of most things in stock. So here is to a very frugal August.
have to say I am amazed at how well I have been doing and although I have forgotten to record a couple of bits and bobs on my list when I was doing my accounts I reackon the most I have spent this year is abourt £25 which is gobsmacking considering I would have normally spent at least that a month before I started the challenge.:A0
