There is a whole section in Living Sober about eating sweet things when AF, it's actually a very good book....although some I know are not interested in AA, it does throw up some interesting points and makes you realise why you do what you do when planning a drink, drinking or abstaining :)

It basically goes through the HALT thing (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) and explains them and gives you tips on how to avoid feeling this way.

    So far so good ;)

    Hugs Jo,
Sorry you are struggling at the moment hun.I wish I could wave a magic wand for you to make it all better but sadly I only have a WHIP ;)
This is tough I know but you really have to NOT buy the stuff on your way home.Once you get home and the panic sets in you have to try some diverting tactics.....play with the kids, eat biscuits, text me, have a bath, anything to get you over thinking about going out again. And keep out of your kitchen at this time:o
Only you can do this Jo and you have to .................

    Good luck

  • Jo what everyone else has said. With slight variations we are all the same. I believe it is all down to habit. Break the viscious circle and you can give yourself a chance. Personally, I'd throw that book away. In your heart of hearts you know what is right for you. Good luck.

    Shaggydoo 12 for me please.

I am absolutely fed up with this drinking business :(

I've been reading Liver Sober since Sunday whenever I've had 10 minutes spare and it says that it's unwise to set yourself goals, it's better to not drink for that day or even that hour or for the next 10 minutes, it then even says if all these are too much then just don't drink whilst you are reading that page! This is to obviously break it down and make it all more managable.

This is where my problem lies.....I want to break it down into 10-15 minute sections today but I leave work, go to offy and buy alcohol, go home and drink it. If I left work and went home without the alcohol, then this in itself would trigger panic and cravings. If I left work and went to offy and left alcohol in car, then it'd be singing to me all night long. What am I gonna do?

I could and have said to myself in the past, that I won't buy any now but if I really want to then I'll go out to shop later. If I do decide I want to go out and get some later then this could and has previously caused a very uncomfortable evening because I couldn't think of a justifiable excuse to go to the shop. I can't afford to make this worse than it's gonna be otherwise there's more chance I'll have vino collapso, to steal a phrase ;)

Yes, yes, I know, I'm making all too much out of this, but I don't want to drink today and I get the whole not drinking for the next 10 minute thing but I don't know how to give myself a chance of doing it.

My main problem is getting home with no alcohol, the draw to the shop is so strong it's practically impossible to ignore. I don't want alcohol and I don't want to stop but I always pull up and go in anyway. My mind is saying, 'you'll regret it later if you don't get any now'

It is very important that I have an AF day today and tomorrow as OH is out on Friday and Saturday and if I drink tomorrow then I won't have any strength to stay AF when he's out and so I know that the weekend will be wiped out.

    Feel like crap :(

Hi Jo, I can very much relate to how you're feeling on this one. I've been trying the 10 minutes at a time thing, without much success. I don't know if you find this, but it just makes me think about alcohol even more.

So a new approach from me today...I know my problem time will be when I leave work, so I'm just not gonna think about it at all until then. Then I will get in the car and drive home. That's where the plan sort of falls down a bit, but I'm hoping that once I'm home something will keep me from getting back in the car and going to the shops.

I'll be rooting for you today. Come on we can do it :T

  • Morning all,
    I'm a bit hungover today.
Jo, Just to add my suggestion for what it's worth.
It's a non-issue until you leave work, right?
Suggest you set an alarm for an hour before you should be leaving the office. Then eat something sweet or drink a hot chocky or something. My theory is this will fight against the hungry feeling and give you a sugar boost ready for you to be strong on your drive home.
And try drinking water today to guard against the Thirsty one.
And maybe try and get a bit of sun on your face at lunchtime and remind yourself that you are a wonderful and unique human being and there are loads of us rooting for you.
Hugs hun, and try to distract yourself with other things.
Where were you on the Kudzu debate? I seem to remember you getting into a really good place when you were taking it ages ago...?

Just to add my bit jo (and I think this proves how much we all are rooting for you):

My advice is a mixture of all said before: Definitely don't buy any because if you do you'll drink it some time and you don't want to. Ignore the 10 minute stuff in the book because it'll make you obsessed. I'm definitely with the 'day at a time' brigade and, in reality, that's only about 6 hours at a time between work and bed. So ignore 10 minutes and substitute 'you can do it for 6 hours'. As far as Kudzu is concerned I don't think it did anything for me physically but the principle of taking the pills (now substituted by daily vitamin supplement and milk thistle) at 6 p.m. is like a message to me, AF night starts here.

I know I'm not a shining example because I don't want to give up but I know I can (and do) have AF nights when I want. If I'm honest, the actual 6 hours are not the worst it's the disappointment earlier in the day of not having the lifestyle choice of an evening with wine that I have to fight.

    :T:T:T Go jo!!!

The book is fantastic! Nowt wrong with the book :)

I don't think Kudzu really did much for me, I think it was just a good period for me and nowt to do with the Kudzu.

I'm going to pop out at lunchtime and might pick up some hot choklit or if I really feel energetic I shall pop to Mr Ts (which is the furthest shop away from here) and pick up a BOGOF on Frijj milkshakes

    Still going well ;)
