Hi I called BT yesterday to cancel my contract due to line rental price increase.
    I have a BT line with a broadband option 1 (10GB allowance).
I've been told that because of my bundle package I'm not allowed to cancel my contract which I think is not true.
BT said you are welcome to cancel your line rental contract but you have to pay a charge for cancelling your BB!!
    Any advice on this, please?
    Thank you for your help.

I did the same thing. After being passed around a bit a supervisor told me that I am able to leave my line rental contract without penalty but that I will have to pay 7.75 per month to the end of term for the option 1 bb and calls package I am on. I mentioned that I am aware that 7.75 is the termination charge for September 2010 but that BT has agreed with Ofcom a reduced termination fee, effective from October 2010, and asked what the option 1 charges would be if I cancel with effect from October, and she said that I will have to wait as those reduced charges have not yet been published. I put though a written request for the same info online and am waiting on the response. I don't mind paying the reduced Option 1 ternination fee if the line rental fee is waived; it will still be cheaper to move to Plusnet than to stay with BT, if the reduced fee is anything less than 7.75 per month. :)

I have just discovered that BTVision are no longer showing ondemand premiership football, so definitely want to cancel now!!

I thought that was one of the big selling points of the Vision thing. It always intrigued me as to how they were going to stream rapidly changing picture content in decent quality onto a television using only 1.5Mbps of bandwidth.

Changes in content probably don't provide an escape clause, but changes to pricing and other factors which are to your material detriment might be.
  • For the benefit of others reading this thread, I have been able to cancel BT whilst in contract for both free evening & weekends, and the free installation minimum term

They informed me that the free evening and weekend calls were part of a separate terms and that the 50p increase was on my line rental only.

My credit never came through on my next bill (Dec10) as I originally questioned it in Oct10 when the 50p rises appeared.

They had agreed to a £4.50 refund (50p for every month left in my contract) but as it was missed off my next bill I rang to complain. When I rang up I was told the same story as you, and I won't get a credit - after I complained further and said I was already promised the refund BT backed down.

The gall of it was at the end of the conversation where the BT chap asked if I was happy with their service, I said no... explaining this because his first defence was to argue with me rather than read what had already been agreed.

I shall be leaving BT just because of the way they spoke to me. In fact I'm quite shocked how rude and argumentative he was.
