I was a little upset at BT increasing the cost by 50p pm for the line renatal too. I called to query whether I could cancel without charge - and yes I can (though the on-line chat person said I couldn't - that's not true). Anyway, a further option available is that BT will give you a £36 credit onto your account and you don't have to extend your current annual contract - that seems a great solution to me... so effectivly I get a £36 credit and need to stay with BT for another 5 months (as that's when my current contract renewal date is) - so that's what I'm doing.

To get this offer just call (the number I used was 0800 0800 030) and speak to the Customer Options team.

    Good luck!

I phoned this number, unfortunately I had to explain to the chap that I spoke to how the 'detrimental change to T&C' works, he did however then confirm that I could leave without penalty but he wouldn't put any credit on the account instead.

I then emailed BT Complaints through their website and today had a call (and confirmation email) that if I stayed until the end of my contract (no extension) then £36 would be credited to the account.

    Cheers HowsThat
  • I cancelled my contract the other day (saving over £400). I used the fact that the increase was going to be detrimental to me. I was on the phone for over 45 mins and they would not admit that this was the reason they were cancelling my contract - it was a "gesture of goodwill".

Just thought others might like to know, even if you signed up on a free installation, you can still cancel your contract OR you can let them know you'll stay if they put a £36 credit on your account. (paid as a £3 credit per month).

Dial 150, select the option to leave and then the option to leave for any other reason (was option 4 when I called 5 mins ago).
  • Hi,

I have a ongoing complaint with BT, basically because of the increase in prices I wanted to move my line rental to SKY, I have been informed of the I will have an early termination charge of £84.

BT have escalated it to there resolution team who just give the standard answer that they cannot set a precedent for me. I am waiting for a phone call from the managers manager, probably to get the same response no doubt.

My problem is that I am sure that I cancelled my call package back in April 2009, when I moved my calls to SKY, but they have no record and I am still on a renewable rolling 12 month contract. I have been a letters by BT allegedly telling me about my contract renewal, but i get that much junk mail from BT I probably binned thinking it was offering me a call package that I didn't want.

Having spoken to the Resolution team manager he has stated to me that there is no record of the terms and conditions being told to me on my initial contract. Is this enough to get out of the termination charge. Or is better to use the clause 48 about the change to material disadvantage? I am expecting a call from them tomorrow night.

    Thanks

Anyone else had luck with this?
  • I managed to get my contract cancelled due to clause 48, the material disadvantage, the resolution team where a joke and sticking to the script of we cannot cancel it, so i asked them for a copy of my contract which they could not supply. So i called the customer services line and told them that I wanted to cancel my copy of my contract, they asked me why and I told them the ongoing story, strangely they told me that a memo had been sent out and anyone wishing to cancel there contract due to the price hike then they could so all my charges were cancelled.
  • I got out of my contract and am moving to Sky

BT were polite, but couldn't find any notes stating I was told I could cancel without penalty (funny that).
They agreed to it as I told them it was just as well I had a copy of the call and could email them a copy if they wish :rotfl:
    baldly going on...

When you move your phone you can either cancel direct or you can let your new provider act as your agent and cancel for you.

In my case I let my new provider do all the work for me. They said they will inform me if there were any charges in case I did not want to continue.

Does anyone know if any of the phone companies will cancel for you and invoke your right to exit without any charges?

The company you move to wouldnt know if you had any charges from your existing provider, they wouldnt have the ability to see your account. So yeah, they lied to you already.

The following claim is not made by my current provider but is made by BT. I use it as I like the words and this is a BT thread.

Switching is Easy: You don't need to contact your current provider – we'll do it for you.

This suggest to me that providers do have access to cancellation charges. I would also hope if it is possible to exit without charge by exercising a clause in a contract they would do it for you and confirm that there will be no cancellation charges.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this - given the short window you have for cancelling a contract due to material disadvantage then I would like a good exit plan ready in case I need to use it.
