BT Putting prices up whilst in contract?

  • I used the BT chat thing and was told:

I have been asking this question so I can get my parents away from bt.

Just got this from thier website. Will see if it works and let you know.

    48. If we make a change to the price or the terms and conditions of a service which is to your material disadvantage, you will not have to pay a charge if you decide to end that service early, unless the Tariff Guide says otherwise. However, once we have told you about such a change, you must let us know that you want to end that service within 10 days. This agreement will continue to apply to any other services that are not affected by any changes that we make.
  • Just found this on another thread!!!

    Hi
I had the same thing and after getting a notification from BT I decided to investigate, my thread below highlights what I done.
Just left BT early without paying termination fee - you can do it too!

Been really wound up with BT's price going up in October so I checked their small print and found this
    Changing the terms (notification)

So....I thought I'd call them to cancel my contract (took ages to find the number but if you're interested it's 0800 800 150). Anyway, I got out of my contract early and with no additional charges!

My friends are going to do the same - we're freeeeeeeeeeee!

    Hope this helps you!!

  • Just to clarify: if using that term to escape the contract:

    1. You're not asking to leave the contract, you're refusing the new terms, and BT will be voiding the contract (effect the same, emphasis different)
    2. The terms above are not BT specific terms, they are legistlative and enforced by OFCOM, and I believe you have 30 days not 10 as BT state. BT's terms do not over-ride OFCOM's.

Can you pls tell me where i can find this on ofcom so i can be prepared?
  • I think a link did get posted here in an old thread about the 7pm -> 6pm time changes but I can't locate it just now, nor is it obvious to me where the information lives in the Ofcom website :(

It's a bit more complex with the bundled packages. Unless there is something in the terms and conditions which permits for price increases specifically, where the supplier wants to change the pricing, and makes you the offer (stay with us at the higher price, else you disagree and the contract will become void - e.g. the supplier refuses to continue to supply under the terms as agreed)

Should you elect to disagree to the new charges, the cancellation of the contract for phone means that the BT Vision thing can't be supplied any more, because the broadband can't be supplied any more since the line is required. However it's not entirely clear to me what happens here - I'd have thought that the dependent contracts (bb and vision) would also have to cancel without penalty, since the supplier is electing not to supply the line anymore - it isn't the customer's issue. The frustration has been caused solely by the supplier, not the customer.

If the BT Vision thing worked on an ISP other than BT then you could migrate the line rental and broadband and keep the Vision thing if you wanted to, but it doesn't, and that's the supplier's stipulation.

    Views?

Correct a court would hold the view having BT BB & Vision is not enforcable....WHY ?

LLU companies for line rental have no obligation to carry any other broadband than thier own compatible products so a change to LLU if you can invalidates BT agrument, thier change domino'd the effect.

BT customers disconnecting to another non LLU line providers, will be liable for for charges for early BT BB/Vision again domino'd from the change of line rental provider as the line discontinuation from BT to transfer another Telco automatically ceases the BB & Vision products.

MSE BT shareholders/stakeholders through any financial product hold on to your hats...BT gonna have a bad financial year for those who exercise thier right to cancel !

The detrimental changes seem to be more detrimental to BT, I wonder who employs the idiots at the top of Telco, its one after the other after the other whom have to release customers in contracts through top management decisions & sadly staff usually are the first and worst to suffer.
If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
    If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:
    :D
    ;)
  • I was a little upset at BT increasing the cost by 50p pm for the line renatal too. I called to query whether I could cancel without charge - and yes I can (though the on-line chat person said I couldn't - that's not true). Anyway, a further option available is that BT will give you a £36 credit onto your account and you don't have to extend your current annual contract - that seems a great solution to me... so effectivly I get a £36 credit and need to stay with BT for another 5 months (as that's when my current contract renewal date is) - so that's what I'm doing.

To get this offer just call (the number I used was 0800 0800 030) and speak to the Customer Options team.

    Good luck!

I have just phoned BT to request early termination because of the increase. I was told to order my phone service from another company and then when I receive a final bill to phone BT and they would cancel the charges. Can I trust them to do this?

I have just spoken to BT Customer Options, and they say that I can get out of my phone contract with no charge anywhere between now and sept 15th, but I have to stay with them for broadband and TV.

Not too happy about this, as the reason I got Vision was for the prem footie, and they confirmed that has gone now :(
