The switch is easy and done by the new provider, but again I tell you that they have no access at all to any billing/account info held by the current provider. If the people who you want to move to have claimed they will tell you about any charges then they have lied to you.

I used to work for BT in the department that dealt with switching (to and from BT) so I know what I'm on about (usually). :)

  • I emailed BT, they called me back and told me that there was a Price Saver tariff being offered with the price changes if I chose it. They claimed this was on the letter I had been sent but it is not! They informed me that the free evening and weekend calls were part of a separate terms and that the 50p increase was on my line rental only. When I pointed out that this still resulted in me being forced to pay the additional 50p for the rest of my term, they said that they would take my feedback to a forum as lots of customers were unhappy. I said that was all very well but did not resolve the issue would they call me back to discuss, and I was told that so many people had complained that they would not be contacting all those who have complained. Effectively they are dismissing this as without contacting all those who have complained, how can they do anything unless they revoke the price increase. I await the email teling me about the Price Saver Tariff, then I plan to take the advice here and refuse to accept the new terms and decline being locked into this price rise.

Hi I called BT yesterday to cancel my contract due to line rental price increase.
    I have a BT line with a broadband option 1 (10GB allowance).
I've been told that because of my bundle package I'm not allowed to cancel my contract which I think is not true.
BT said you are welcome to cancel your line rental contract but you have to pay a charge for cancelling your BB!!
    Any advice on this, please?
    Thank you for your help.
    Raf
  • I cancelled my line and moved to Sky citing thye increase in line rental as a detrimental change

I did not have BB but my neighbour did- she called up and was able to cancel the line and BB as they are both linked.

Tell them you want to cancel the line and move providers- it's not your problem they do BB as a part of THEIR line, and can not do BB with a seperate line provider

A BT operative told me she had an email about it and it did give customers the option to cancel without penalty (I have a feeling some BT people may be not volunteering this info)
    baldly going on...
  • I rang BT today and they told me that I have rights to cancel my line for free but i still need to pay 106 pounds for a broadband cancellation.
when I said that line is linked together with a broadband they said I can use my BB wit any other providers.
    is that true?
Could you please let me know how your neighbour managed to cancel it, please?
    they are driving me mad
Thanks a million for your help

  • If you cancel the line then BB dies with it- you cant be held responsable for actions carried out by BT during your minimum term

Remember the BT broadband and line are now on one bill, so as such they are linked (same bill, same telephone number, same client, same network provider [BT])

If you cancel the line the BB dies- not your fault as they are enforcing a detrimental change, not you

In the case of BB I wonder if this is operator roulette.

If you read clause 2 of Residential Standard Terms it states ...you have separate agreements...[see BT web site for full details].

It is interesting to ask what happens if you cancel the phone line but not the BB. I could not see anything in the T&C to cover this? IN what circumstances would BT cancel the contract in this case? If you cancel the BB contract and if BT cancel the BB contract are different as no fees may be due if BT cancel.

I would want a practical solution of moving to another provider and these questions while interesting do not give a practical solution.
  • BT BB can be used on other line providers, up to a point. Obviously it wont work on cable lines, but also it wont work on unbundled lines, so it wouldnt work on, say, TalkTalk.

Its been a long while since I worked there, so I dont know how the charges will work in this case Im sorry to say.

rang this evening and spoke with a pleasant lady in the glasgow call centre (waited 25 mins before being put through via 150 so be patient!). Line rental + anytime contract only due for renewal in Jan 2011. Started by asking if the 50p line rental increase I'd read about today on a forum applied to my contract - knew it did but played the I wasn't aware it did having had no contact from BT. She said that I should have received a letter early August (can't honestly remember if I did) but clearly stated I never had. She said she would see what she could do for me and then offered me £36 one-off credit with no new 12 month contract attached. Tempting offer but I declined and said I wished to cancel - she went off to check with a supervisor and then came back and said no problem and no early cancellation charges. Gave me a reference to quote to the billing department to have the cancellation charges waived once I received my final bill following the request to cancel from a new provider. I plan to go to o2 who currently provide my broadband which is due for renewal today - I've read on another thread that o2 have offered some renewing broadband customers free broadband for a year if you take out their home phone package which is cheaper than BT's equivalent. Hopefully I will be able to secure.

... rang o2 this morning and renewed / upgraded my broadband package from std to pro (completely free for 12 months) on the proviso that I took out for a 12 months home phone package at £14.25 a month (£9.50 rental + £3 anytime calls + £1.75 caller display). Better than the BT package it replaces as it includes 600 mins of free international calls. Broadly equiv. BT phone package would have been £17.03 a month from 1.10.10 so very pleased.
