    interestingly i have just checked the FSA site and they say 33% of your diet should come from carbs, this is a highly reduced carb intake for most people :), the avg carb intake is in the 60-70% range

    reduced carb diets are not a fad, they have been out along time now and theres ever growing research to back them up
  • Just want to add that the main benefit for me is that I feel lighter and not bloated after eating a plate of (g/f) pasta and I don't get that heavy feeling in the head, like brain fog if you know what I mean. I just feel well!

    This is a very interesting topic for me as I love bread more than chocolate! Would there be any harm in following a gluten free diet if you didn't have coeliac disease?

    as long as the rest of your meals are balanced and you get your daily fibre

    I have also read about milk.     Also apparently cheese is highly addictive but I can't remember the actual ingredient that makes it so.

    I know all of this is not new information, but after years of thinking I was up on nutrition (based on years of dieting), I now realise that my issue is possibly with wheat and dairy, and by voluntarily cutting these out I will probably make my body a lot happier and get less bloated and uncomfortable. :)

    Please keep the opinions coming, it's interesting to hear.


    I would personally be careful- I too cut out carbs from my diet years ago when the Atkins was all the rage... and my health paid for it- I developed terribly bad periods and my cycles started to be 40+ days long, apart from developing fatigue and extreme mood-swings. You need to eat a bit of everything and carbs are at the base of the diet pyramid for humans (I have quite extensive knowledge of nutrition, due to all the research and consultation I had to have when I got really ill). Yor body needs them for fuel- but you need to make sure the amounts you eat are reasonable and that you have vegetables and good quality proteins too. Be reasonable but don't believe everything you read- it tends to have a marketing spin on it. I now follow a very varied diet with lots of vegetables, pulses, fresh fruit and nuts (a bit of bread, but not processed, home made or from the bakers). I don't eat animals, but recently I haven't been eating well and feel quite wiped out (had quiet a hectic schedule with a big change at work), so I have introduced a bit of fish and tiny amounts of meat, just once a month to help me with my cycles.

    Milk- make it organic, like the meat- my PMT symptons (especially breast soreness and fliud retention) disappeared after switching to organic- yeap, those hormones are lethal!

    All I will say is that i come from a country in which we each a very natural, varied diet and most people don't have IBS or allergies- these are 'modern' problems caused by stress and lifestyle as well as poor diets- don't cut out any group, but listen to your body and be reasonable - and don't eat processed food- that is not food, that is poison!! And also, we eat way too much- most of us have pretty sedentary lifes, sitting at a desk and therefore overload of carbs or anything else is not a good thing...

    I eat carbs but wholewheat pasta and brown rice and wholegrain bread but i don't eat wheat all the time and a lot less since using brown substitutes as its so filling...can't stand white stuff now, but i always find it really hard to cut it out completely.

    Handmade bread by yourself or baker is free from chemicals, additives per se...i really do need to dig that breadmaker out :D

    Whoever said cheese is addictive is right...i tried to be vegan but the cheese cravings were ridiculous for me...so at the mo i'm just veggie but i feel better ditching the meat as i found this hard to digest and it made me sluggish, head fog was worse. Soya cheese is just not nice to me :(

    Also a read a book called The Gut Reaction and she gave advice regarding lots of different illnessess and how they all stemmed from the gut. But said something about chewing food 40 times and this starts the digestive process in the mouth, i have tried but got bored but it also helps you to eat less as your not wolfing your food like i sometimes do.

    Another thing there is a book wheat and gluten free cookbook at the book people for £4.99 and there is a free delivery code, i'm going to get one for my SIL as she is gluten free :).

    No, of course not. I did and I feel so much better. Cutting gluten out doesn't mean you can't eat carbs, you can still eat rice and potatoes and corn based snacks. You need to give it at least a month to see the benefits as gluten sticks to your intestine like glue for weeks :eek:

    If you make your own bread, I can recommend using spelt flour...it's one of the older types of grain and I've made some really tasty bread rolls with it :). Also didn't feel as stodgy/bloated afterward.

    This gluten is turning out to be a bit of a devil ingredient. All I want to do is to feel better and if it means trying to reduce/cut out foods then I'm all for trying it.

    I had a soya milk and yoghurt smoothy today with banana and blueberries. I've got to say it way delicious and I didn't get that tiredness I get when I have proper milk..
    9/70lbs to lose :)
