You can specify in your eBay search the distance from your location. Gumtree and netmums will also have local ads. If you have friends or relatives who have recently had babies, they will probably have stuff they can lend you.

    Congratulations!
  • Look out for NCT sales in your area too.

We got loads of stuff from friends and relatives, so I'd see what you get offered before you start buying.

kiddiecare tends to be a reasonably priced website. Visit mothercare/john lewis/toys r us/mammas and papas etc and view things face to face then go hoe and buy online for alot less.

Don't believe everything you read, alot of the supposed 'essentials' from baby lists are not actually essential and a waste of money. Car boots good for things like bouncer seats/swings baby bath if you want one ( i use a sink and i'm on 3rd baby).

  • Congratulations. I'm due in six weeks and have been able to get loads of stuff from Gumtree. If you are inclined to find out the sex of your baby at your scan this can help for getting bargains in advance. I got a big bin bag of baby boy clothes (about 75 items) for 0-3months for £15. I also got lovely change table and cot from Ikea which were pretty reasonably priced (when compared to mothercare etc).
  • Freecycle is also a good place to look, at it costs is your petrol.:)

My friend just got a brand new moses basket and stand...the lady used it for her baby-reborn dolly.

Buy the bare minimum - don't be sucked in by the magazines which are full of what I call 'solutions to problems which don't exist' - a changing table being one. These are a nice luxury, but if cash is tight a bed or the floor is just as convenient.

You can get other items as you need them.

I've had three babies - no. 1 had everything you could possibly buy, half of it never used, got rid of before baby no. 2. Baby no. 2 had half the stuff you could possibly buy. Got rid of it all then 'cos thought family was complete. Baby no. 3 has had nothing at all (long story but husband walked out) and he's fine and realised we needed very, very little!

the moral of my story is buy what you KNOW you will need (car seat, pram, cot, sheets for cot, a few toys (probably a play mat for the early months) , bottles, sterilizer (if not breastfeeding - if breastfeeding, leave it), changing mat, nappies, wipes, cream for sore bottom, baby bubble bath, non-bio washing powder, pack of 7 vests in 0-3, pack of sleepsuits in 0-3, a couple of seasonally appropriate outfits in 0-3, seasonally appropriate coat/jacket/cardigan, pack of socks, stairgates, plastic socket covers....that should just about do it!) and then buy as you go along - you will see things on display that look essential but actually don't meet your family's needs so you never use them. A family that walks alot might need a baby carrier, one that goes everywhere in the car, doesn't. Second hand is fine in everything but cot mattress and car seat (in case it's been in an accident). Ikea do very cheap cots - their matresses are about £20 so you can afford to replace them for each child if you feel so inclined.

    Congratulations!
