  • Tesco have got nursery basic bedding on offer online at the moment, on 3 for 2 and reasonable prices. Also buy via quidco and get some cashback too.
Matalan isn't bad either, pretty cheap.

i would say matalan i love their range and its pretty inexpensive, i refuse to pay over the odds for something that isnt used for a great length of time i know people who buy new for every babie and i think its such a waste of money if you buy neutral then it can be reused.

  • Ikea do a reasonably priced range of nursery furniture. However, we got a room set (cotbed, wardrobe, dresser) from the Glasgow Pram Centre (they deliver) on offer for about £200 - about the same price as a cotbed alone in Mothercare/Babies R Us so it's worth keeping an eye out there.

As for bedding etc - I didn't particularly like Matalan's cellular blankets - they went very hard after washing and need a good few runs to soften up. Argos are okish but the sheets are very thin. I got some Mothercare basic, white, flanelette sheets and they wash brilliantly. For top blankets for the crib, I've liked TK Maxx so far - get some really good quality ones nice and cheap. Other ones are all from Mothercare again because I wasn't keen on the quality/feel of the ones in Matalan (plus, we were given a lot!). I tend however to swaddle my LO at night or use his GroBag sleeping bag.

Clothes - Next are good for little babies I think, they run a bit smaller than other places though my LO was in his "up to one month" sized ones until about a week ago and he's now 11lb 9oz and 2 months old so be wary of sizing - it's only a very rough guide. Asda and Matalan are reasonable quality, good range of bits and bobs and they're cheap - they run a bit bigger than Next and my LO is only just into his 0-3 ones from there now. I like Sainsburys too - they seem to suit my very tall but skinny boy! Mothercare clothes are massive - most of the 0-3m still drown him!

hope that helped some - I'm still figuring it out myself!

kiddiecare is good. I was a fan of matalans pram blankets and of grobags, both my kids were little wigglers who would boot of covers at the first chance so a gro bag was essential.

Our local TK Maxx have lots of grobags, worth a look as you may get a bargain. A lot of people find these much more convenient than blankets and sheets as they can't be kicked off by wriggly babies. Would be easy to post in a large padded envelope.

If it is a gift, personally I would prefer one well-chosen quality item that will wash well, as really cheap stuff may shrink/bobble up with all the regular washing that baby stuff needs.

We are buying up stuff now for babies due in February. You would be surprised by the quantity of stuff you could find, inlcuding brand new stuff with tags on. Our collection so far includes Mamas and papas John Rocha stuff and lots of things like play mats, not paid more then a £5 for anything. Inlcuding a Mamas and Papas baby bath.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
