For big items kiddicare has been good (and generally v. cheap). For clothes I found that Asda babygrows etc didn't last well and mostly shrank or bobbled in wash (which says something given they don't wear anything more than a couple of months), but Primark ones have lasted for ages.

Best bet is just to avoid the money-wasters that the baby shops all try and flog as essential - bumpers for cots for example do nothing.
For everything else, there's MSE :T

It is worth asking what she still needs if you haven't done so already, as you may find she has been given lots of stuff by friends with slightly older babies. She may already have lots of bedding, but no bed to put it on, for example. She may also need one bigger, more expensive item like a dresser or changing station, rather than lots of smaller things which she is more likely to get at a baby shower or second hand from friends.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

You've just reminded me of the Tesco baby vests I bought. I thought I had the world's fastest growing newborn until I realised how much they had shrunk in the wash - they lasted all of a week!

I kept an eye on mothercare for a sale in their bedding then got a cot bed sized bundle of two cellular blankets, two flanette sheets, two fitted sheets and a fleece blanket for £21.99, they are tough and have survived tummy bugs and everything else. I got crib sheets and blankets from eBay second hand and new ones from asda, again on sale. To be honest, I didn't use the crib sheets much, I just used the flat cot sheets folded up. Bumper set from asda. But if she is worried about a bumper there is an air wrap one for sale that Ive heard good things about.

I second the Glasgow pram centre for cots etc, they have great sales. Personally, I didn't like the ikea cots, they cheaper ones felt very cheap to me. Kidiecare have a few on sale. I ended up getting a mothercare playball cot for £40 off eBay new local pick up. My crib was from ebay also.

Shop about, or post your budget and we will look (coz we always like to look)

IKEA cellular blankets, sheets and muslin cloths have been great and one set of each has seen me through three little boys
