    2nd Hand
I bought a M&P cot with waterproof mattress (in immaculate condition) from Gumtree for £50, a saving on new of over £150.

I personally wouldnt be buying a 2nd hand mattress. I'd always buy new. The rest of your advice is spot on though.

  • OH and I spent a good couple of hours on Saturday writing a list and researching prices/reviews for the things we want to buy.

Boots are doing a half price offer on their steam steriliser at the moment..thibnk it's £10.99 so have bought one of those.

We also bought the BT 150 baby monitor from Amazon at a discounted price, that has come up with the best reviews.

Mothercare have a 10% off deal on at the moment too, so we are planning to gothere this weekend and order all the big stuff - travel system, carseat and isofix etc..luckily my folks and OH's folks are very kindly paying for this so we are lucky that a big chunk is being covered off there.

The cot bed we have chosen is 40% off in othercare too. I think cotbeds make more financial sense than just getting a cot as baby can use the bed bit too as he/she grows.

Aside from that, OH's parents have been scouring their local car boot fairs for us and have managed to get us lots of baby clothes that still have the tags on for next to nothing, and they got us a baby bath for £5 that is practically new too!

You could ask for vouchers for various places as christmas presents? Would help keep the cost down and means you have time to research the best prices;) and see how long the deals are on for:D

That's a good idea! Will do that, thanks :)

I'm not going to buy anything at the moment, going to hold firm until scan ;) It was awful having to put away all the little baby things I'd bought when I MC before :(

Hopefully we can persuade the parents to buy us a travel system for Xmas :)

The half price bottles sound good, but hopefully they'll have plenty of sales on Xmas/January, so we'll stock up then :D Using Quidco when we buy online, if we can! :)

Oh and we will get a cot bed, was getting confused LOL. Makes more financial sense as Metranil says ;)

Although I am a big fan of re-using, recycling etc, please DON'T buy a second hand car seat, its not worth the risk.

You have to have some things ready for when baby comes, as I doubt you feel up to shopping when just given birth. You're not allowed to take baby home until you have a car seat fitted.

    I just like planning :)

No, I won't :) As I said brand new stuff that I'm not budging on are car seat and mattress for cot bed. I also want a new buggy as heard a few bad things about buying 2nd hand ones.
  • I personally wouldn't buy a brand new buggy for baby but thats just my personal view. I tend to find that unless you want a 'designer' buggy then most second hand buggys are a fraction of the rrp and have machine washable covers so can be easily freshened up.

Personally i think the only things you need brand new are - breast pumps, bottles, car seats and mattresses.

Babies don't really need toys until they're around 5/6 months old and even then they don't need much - maybe a toy that chimes and some baby books.

I have never used a baby monitor but then again i lived in small houses and so could hear straight away when baby was crying.

I'd say a good thing to do at this stage is buy something with your monthly shop - be it some size 1/2 nappies, baby wipes etc.

Anyhoo you'd asked for prices so i'll give them as for what i paid for each item -

Cot matress - free with cot bed
Buggy - £50 (a duluxe one with seperate seat/carry cot brought off ebay) or £80 for a brand new one brought from argos with a basic lie flat feature (think that's essential for a newborn)
Car seat - free from relatives but generally from £50
Feeding equipment - around £80 but this included an electric breast pump
Cot - £100 off ebay with free mattress - is now used by 29 mo as a junior bed
Most clothes - about £7 for a 3 pack of sleepsuits, £3 for a 3 pack of vests - didn't bother with newborn sizes as bubs was too big for them at 7lbs10ozs - also got loads v cheap from charity shops or from freecycle
Toys - around £30 for an electonic baby gym again 29mo still uses it as it can be rotated so its like an activity table
Baby monitor - £15 but as yet unused
Bathing equipment - £15 for a baby bath - some people bypass this cost by putting baby in sink or in tub with them

Sorr for the lenght but i hope this has helped

  • I too have told OH that we have to buy the car seat and cot mattress new. I know that strictly speaking there isn’t anything that says you can’t buy a second hand pram but I would rather have one new – the way I see it we will be saving on other stuff by buying second hand so we can get a few things new if we wish to.

    Thanks.

I won't rule out a second hand buggy entirely if one came up locally on ebay that I could view before bidding on, or maybe at a nearly new sale?
  • Hi did you know that Mothercare do a price match promise on everything except clothes. So if you want to buy your pram etc from a 'real shop' you can print out a price from any website which has a really good price (except auction sites) take it into the mothercare shop and they will match it. We got our pushchair there for £195 instead of their price £299 yesterday, excellent!! They didn't quibble or anything! they do it for mothercare online too.
Also got our cotbed from gumtree (£10) but will get a new mattress, and car boot sales are AMAZING for clothes. Like 20p for a sleepsuit etc. :)
