no, as I say, it was overnight that things went really wrong, I believe the NCT helpline only operates 8am-10pm.
PS. my previous post wasn't insinuating that NCT aren't helpful, just disagreeing with the point that you don't have to FF if you want to BF. With all the will in the world, I couldn't manage it and I still wish it would have worked out. We had a very bad experience of post-natal care (hospital and community) which contributed, I believe, to my failure to BF successfully and probably dented my confidence in being able to persevere until I could contact someone such as the NCT. However, I could go on about that for weeks and it's not the point of the OP's thread.0 -
Esio trot, I know exactly where you are coming from. When you are having issues with Breastfeeding, whether you will manage or not very much depends on the health professionals that you meet in those first few days.
All the phone help lines in the world wouldn't have helped me first time around. However having a great midwife and health visitor second time was all I needed.
It is very sanctimonious of people to think that anyone can breastfeed if they want, and that all they need is the NCT. It also puts undue pressure and guilt on those who tried and didn't manage. And like you, it's not that I don't think the NCT arent helpful for some. They just could never have solved my breastfeeding issues first time personally.0 -

Not due until May (fingers crossed!) but we like planning. I know there have been similar threads in the past, but I can't find them, and I want something to take my mind off 'morning, noon and night' sickness :rotfl:
We were thinking of getting the following items brand new or second hand. Any ideas on prices for these items? I know it's a bit "how long is a piece of string" but would like some idea of figures.
Brand new
Cot mattress
Buggy
Car seat
Feeding equipment
Second hand
Cot
Most clothes
Toys (can newborns use the playmat/activity centres things where they lay on their back?)
Baby monitor
Bathing equipment
And anything else I've forgotten.
Also, how many nappies do newborns tend to go through? We're going to use disposables.0 -
Its never too soon to start buying! Firstly I would get the 'new' things bought first, starting with the carseat! Its probably the biggest purchase if your not planning on choosing a travel system and can eat your entire budget in one swoop.
Next I would include a packet of nappies and wipes to your grocery shop from now on, it can hurt to store them in the garage or under your bed as they are sealed packets. I use washables but i think babies can stay in newborn size for about 3-5 weeks but if in doubt just stock up on size 1's and 2's and just a few packets of newborn to begin with.0 -
Have you looked online at prices?
Mattress i would say between £30-£60+, depending on how good you want it. We got ours with our cotbed from ILs as Lilys cousin only used it about 5 times.
Pram, you can usually get a travel system with a car seat for about £200.
Feeding, Breastfeeding is always cheapest. But if formula feeding then you need a steriliser, bottles and milk. Milk is usually upto £10 a tub, bottles depend on the brand your buying.
You can get a microwave steriliser for about £15 usually.
Clothes you can get from ebay for cheap, or new from tesco, asda, etc. They outgrow them v. quickly!
They dont really need toys as such until they are 5/6months. Playmats are a good idea, but Lily hated hers :rotfl:
Monitors you can get basic ones for £20ish. Ours were £100 for digital ones, but my dad bought them hehe.
Baby baths are cheap, but we put her in the big bath from about 10 weeks as she was so tall.
I'd say about 8-10 nappies a day, stock up now so you have a backlog. Dont get to many size 1's though as baby might outgrow them quickly.
You usually get a voucher for a free pack in your bounty pack when it comes0 -
I go through 1-2 packs of nappys a fortnight costing £6 per pack. I wouldnt stock up much on nappys as I had to give nappys away due to this. I have a 7 week old baby who is now in size 3 as size 2 leak. He was small at birth 6lbs 10oz but is now 11lbs 1oz lol. So even if you have a small baby they may not be in small sizes for long. Same with clothes I am having to now put him in 3-6 month clothes.. seems only 2 mins he's been in newborn and 0-3!!0

Also if you breasfeed you just need breastpads. which costs pennies. if formula feeding 1 tub lasts about 5-7 days in the first few weeks. most formula tubs cost £7 a tub.
clothes i bought 2nd hand in big bundles and picked out my fav outfits.. but he only really wears vest and sleepsuits tbh.0 -
I would also buy little and often of the bits you need - start now looking for good offers plus you will be able to take advantage of the january sales as well before little ones imminent arrival.0

You've got plenty of time to look out for bargains!
We waited for sales and voucher codes to get everything so didn't pay full price for anything. Hotdeals is a great site to keep an eye on as is here on MSE
Nappies... my Daisy was 7lb 15oz and we've just had to buy more packs of size 1 and 0-3 month clothes are HUGE for her so had to buy more newborn clothes!!! I guess my baby likes to be different:rotfl:BLOWINGBUBBLES:kisses2: SMARTIE120
