MoneyMoral Dilemma: Should I make my friend pay for the vase?

Isn't it illegal to have someone work for you uninsured? What happens if she has a bad accident and harms herself, say tripping over the cat/dog/down the stairs - etc.
I don't think she should pay, she probably feels bad enough already.0 -
No, you absolutely should not make your friend pay. Have you never had an accident and broken something belonging to someone else? I'm sure your friend feels awful about what has happened.
Also, if you were to deduct it from an employee's wages you may want to consider the fact they could sue you for illegal deduction of earnings. It's up to you to insure your own property.0 -
1. If the vase was that expensive, it should have been insured
2. Accidents happen, however sad the consequences.
3. What if you'd done your own cleaning and broken the vase; who would you go for?
4. What if an accident caused injury to you or your friend - what would you do then?
5. If you were lonely would you rather have a vase or a friend?0 -
No.
Although it was your friends request, it was your decision to ‘hire’ them – you knew the status of their credentials as a service provider to come into your home and do work for you, i.e. whether they had insurance or not to cover such things. Your choice, your loss.
How was the vase able to be broken, was it unsafe, you allowed the person to handle the vase, did you do a health and safety risk assessment first? May be you put the person at risk.0 -

I think you should ask yourself "would I make her pay for the vase if she'd broken it while just visiting me as a friend?"0

If she was a friend, then the first words out of her mouth should have been "sorry, I broke your vase, I will replace it for you".
I would be much more upset that she ( as a friend) didn't have the good manners to OFFER to replace it.
She asked YOU to employ HER and she doesn't feel the NEED to at least appologise & offer ( regardless of if you want to replace it).
Manners maketh(wo)man as the saying goes!
People with no manners rarely end up being good friends as life is all about "them".0 -
