Thanks everybody.
So stage 1 of the journey was, as I described, heavy going through North Wales but that was nothing compared to the nine and half hours spent sitting in the car on the M40 motorway on 18th/19th December (add to that the few hours shuffling along at a snails pace). Arrived on the stretch of motorway at around 4.30 and cleared it at 2.40 am the following morning. Good job I had packed sleeping bags, two thermos flasks (one soup and one coffee - strong) and OHs parents had insisted on giving us two loaves of bread and a fish!!! Well about 20 cheese sandwiches. I think that they thought Germans dont eat bread!! Came in very handy when sharing them with our new neighbours on the motorway. Amazing how you can occupy yourself when not knowing what is happening. Relying on the local radio station for information who were relying on people sitting on the mortorway to phone in and tell them what was happening wasn't necessarily the most informative thing to do but it was quite entertaining. Now I know what is meant by the Blitz spirit. I have since heard that nobody was hurt or died so that is good news. Obviously missed the stay in the hotel on the Saturday night and literally just made it to the ferry with one hour to spare.
Mr C was amazing and kept driving when we got off the ferry. We stopped at a little service station on the toll road to Reims and had an hours sleep in the car (reminded me of Cheery).
Decided to break the journey up by stopping off in Saarbrucken. Stopped at the first hotel we came to in the city and just booked in. Thought is was a bit of a strange place when I asked for an outside line and the (male) receptionist told me to ring 108. Couldn't understand why I kept getting a man in one of the other rooms who wanted to know my name and where I came from. When I was woken in the middle of the night by some rather erm...... interesting noises I realised that it was not the kind of hotel a lady of my standing should be in  Very adventurous indeed. Mr C slept right through and didnt believe me until we went to breakfast and were the only people in the hotel other than a group of russian businessmen and some scantily clad women serving them. Hilarious.
We made it to Regensburg but unfortuately only had a few hours there before moving on to our chalet in the Alps. It is so lovely here, I feel like I have been catapulted into a christmas card. Boy do the Germans know how to keep the roads clear but, even more importantly, they know how to celebrate Christmas in style. Only just got internet access so went to FB to check on my big Moo who, it would seem is having a fantastic time in N Wales. I fear he may not wish to come home!
Signed up for some skiing lessons at the end of the week and then the big journey back North. Weather in Germany is bad and the Germans are complaining about the state of the roads. I cannot believe it because we have not once been held up although the journey did take twice as long on the this side it is simply because you cannot drive at the high speeds people are used to. Snow ploughs everywhere and I am at 1500 metres and the road up was completely clear.
Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wishing you a very, very happy new year. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher0 -
