Thanks Cheery, yes back pay will be a fair chunk towards the ferry crossing for Germany. I am so excited about that I am determined not to let anything stand in our way. OH was out of work for 4 months earlier this year and we managed. If the truth be told I feel quite pleased that he will be home. I just need to keep him occupied because he does get grumpy when he has too much time on his hands. I am hoping that it means that we can get the few little jobs finished on my flat and then maybe, just maybe, I can find a tenant for it if the mortgage company will finally agree to allowing me to rent it out withouth any shenaningans about changing to a buy to let and admin costs etc. That should help out quite a lot.
See I knew there was a reason I didnt get the severance, just needed time to see it thats all :)

So after the shock news of OHs impending return home I have come down off the high of having him return to the panic of reality and how we are going to see the month out let alone how we are going to get the money together that is needed for the holiday. I am holding out a tentative hope that when he goes in today he discovers that the funding for the project has now arrived. I know that I want him home but for right now I am prepared to put up with seperation for just a little while longer if it helps to pay for the last things needed for the holiday such as dog boarding and all the winter wear I will need. I have done my banking this morning and readjusted the months budget and we will just about scrape through. Thank goodness that I had the foresight to be saving and squirreling in the good times rather than just ploughing it all of the cc.

    So extras required
    Dog boarding = £250
    Petrol - £200
    Overnight stay - £80

    Total £660

Ok I have 75 days until I am actually on the road which is when I need the petrol money and the overnight stays = £280 = £3.63 per day needed to be earned

Dog boarding kennels - £250 (at a very conservative effort) = need to put thinking cap on for this one.

    Let the challenge begin

Good luck cherisong! Have you joined the make £10 a day challenge? (oh yes, I can see it in your signature!) Get over to the thread and ask for ideas! Anything you can ebay/amazon? Sorry, only just woke up, head not very imaginative at the minute! I have every faith in you though :)

Thanks Cheery. Yes have done the make £10 for the last two months. Month before was great I doubled my target. Took my eye off the ball this month and not done anything much with it. I will have to start with a new enthusiasm. Thanks for your ideas. I do have things to ebay but I have been giving them away on freecycle as I am a bit soft like that.

Could you delay the trip until moo is cleared to return to the UK which would save the kennel fees. It would also take some of the presure off having to find the money on a vastly reduced income.

    Thanks Moo,
I have already broached that one with OH and would be more than happy to do that. It would mean that we would go away at the end of March. He is, however adamant that we should go. Whilst he has had several skiing holidays over the last few years I have only ever managed a few days in London for the last 6 years. He can see that I am in need of a rest but I would be more than happy to postpone it. I dont think it would incur any more than an admin charge to move it back. I will continue to work on that front. I am sure that when he is here he will start to see the reality. On the other hand, if it means he gets just any kind of work for the short term because he sees the need to earn money it might be the tipping point he needs to see that earning a large wage but travelling for hours per day and living away from home is not a good quality of life and you can still have quality on less money. I have known this for some time. I am also sure that we can manage if I just manage to get the flat rented out that will make a massive dent in our outgoings.

So why not do both. Use the £250 you'd save on kennel fees to have a holiday in the UK. You're not tied down to school hols so you'd get somewhere sensible (assuming you avoid the last week of October) for that sort of cash and you could still go away at the end of March but be no more out of pocket. Crucially your family would be together for Christmas.....

In fact for £289 you could depart next week for this although £313 would get you this

Thanks both for your suggestions. All good. The idea for Christmas though was to go to the Alps as we want to be somewhere where it is guaranteed snow, we want to be miles away from family so that they cannot descend on us and cause havoc as last year and we are planning a reccie for eventual move abroad. If we cant go to the Alps then I would be more than happy to stay at home, after all I do live in a really beautiful place. It would just mean that we have to resign ourselves to having to deal with certain people that we cant put off visiting.
Those cottages look very nice though. Gives me ideas for renting this place out :)
