This thread is like a little microcosm of so many things that are wrong with this country.
I have an Electron card. I have no interest in the free guaranteed upgrade to the Halifax standard current account or whatever it's called, because I'd lose the electron card and have to have a standard Visa debit card. That would mean that if I slip up with my finances and I present the card in a shop and don't have enough money, it would be authorised and I'd end up forking out bank charges.
With the electron card it would be declined (have had this once in many, many years, my fault) and I then used my credit card instead. No bank charges. Embarrased? No. Better off? Yes.0 -

After reading this thread with great amusement, and having had numerous types of cards over the years, I now only have two basic account cards (one visa the other maestro) and a cash machine only savings card.
My cards probably seem pathetic in relation to the platinum and gold cards, but the hardest lession in life is not what pretty card is in your wallet, but how much you actually have to spend. There is no point in having that pretty pink card from Virgin/Halifax or that shiny sliver Barclaycard Platinum, because it doesn't really matter what you have if you don't actually have enough money to spend on them (oh and I mean your own money, not the banks).
Thanks
