URGENT - Bought a car on ebay but something amiss?

Hi all
I've been tracking a car for a couple of days on ebay which seems very very nice and a bargain too
Now bid and won it!
I'm just querying a few things and would like direction/suggestions please, before I make the coach trip from Liverpool down to Ilford, Essex to collect it on Monday/Tuesday.....
It's a: Mazda 6 TS Diesel 143 (bhp) on '07, 2007 plate BUT has 126,000 miles, 1 previous owner as company car, full service history and 12 mths MOT.
Link here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250667995233&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
The guy who listed the guy stated he had it listed privately for £4995 and may sell sooner than the finishing time if the right price was put forth. I contacted him and he said he'd accept £4100.
I got a friend at a garage to price up the car and he came back with a valuation of £6200 MINUS £3000 due to the high mileage....
But, that didn't worry me as I've had a Mazda 6 before from the same year and it was the best car I ever had
So, I believe a car is worth what you're prepared to pay for it....
What did worry me was the guy calling straight after auction asking for £100 deposit and then after me asking if he was named on the log book, saying 'No' as he was a trader.
Told him my money was in my ISA account and a deposit could not be transferred, it had to be withdrawn in person at the bank on Monday PLUS he should take a leap of faith on the depo front as I am - by spending out on coach tickets to London.
I've just read his feedback and he has sold a few cars, where a few of the deals have not been finalised BUT also with a few slanderous statements IMPLYING he is trying to sell cars which he has not legally registered for some reason or another!!!
SHOULD I buy the car from this guy, or contact ebay stating my concerns? I really really do want it but £4001 is alot of money to be duped out of. I don't see the negative in anyone but upon checking him out and by him saying he's a trader who doesn't have to declare himself as an owner, it has scared me a little....
Also can anyone suggest the best HPi or car checker to use for terms of value? I believe though that IF he was setting out to dupe anyone, the car would come back with a clean bill of health anyhow as the identity would be from another 'straight' car?
I've been onto the autotrader website and made a note of the stolen V5's floating about so if I travel down, I'll be cross-referencing.
Are there any other precautions I should be taking? Apart from:-
** Contacting garage in service book to see if they did indeed carry out the services/repairs on the Mazda.
** Ask the seller for his personal ID to make a record of his driving licence number.
** Make sure if his ID tallys with the address at which I attend.
** Asking for two written receipts (one each) for the cash transaction.
** HPI check if good idea?
Can anyone please advise as this is the first time I've bought a car on ebay and my partner is due to have our 2nd baby in 3 weeks so do not need to be diverting my attention/energy to resolving being ripped off if the car turns out to be a scam
Bye for now,
Stephen :j

I would never ever buy a car from Ebay even if the listing sounds legit. Too many scams on there and free ad sites. I would always buy from a proper dealer and see the car and details first. Before I bought my first car last week I had it checked out to ensure it wasn't stolen or still on finance even though it was from a showroom. It is however up to you at your own risk. If you do go to collect and buy the car take someome with you because a few people have been beaten up and robbed when they have gone to pay and buy a car they have bought from say Gumtree and it was a scam.0

am i missing something ? the feedback of the seller looks decent enough , no mention of stolen cars ?0
-
It may be legit but you always have to be careful. Also it has done a lot of miles in just 3 years. Mine is 17 years old and done 110,000 miles which is less then the 3 year old Mazda. Does the milege usage matter with the running of the car?0

Hiya Kimberley
Thanks for that advice too - I'd read something like that only yesterday where a woman and son (disabled I think) were robbed of £5000!!!
I'd have to be seriously injured to part with my hard earned cash - took long enough to get that amount together! Will throw my partner into him - the newborns bump will knock him into next week! :rotfl:
But seriously, I do get your point about ebay. I've bought loads on there - nearly 700 feedback BUT never something as expensive as this!
And I get your point over the mileage too. It has covered alot of miles but if this has just been motorway miles then it's irrelevant at that many (or so I think) and could be equivelant to say 65,000 miles? My only concern is it being a diesel and sounding like a taxi! You get some '09 Audis at the traffic lights that sound like they've been to the moon and back! :rotfl:
Steveo3002, my concerns over his feedback are here:- http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=khanks.123&&sspagename=VIP:feedback&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller He has had mutually agreed withdrawn feedback (which implies a stolen car) and it seems a few transactions that have not resulted in completion.....
Keep the opinions coming please everyone0 -
Unless I'm missing something at this stage if you have any doubts about the validity and value of the deal simply back out as in default. Ebay are used to this, do not pursue etc. You simply get a stripe against your name which will be gone the next time you bidI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
says his name wasnt on the log book (wouldnt that be the case with a trader?) i certainly wouldnt pull the feedback if someone had tried to sell a stolen car0
-
If he is a trader, why is he not listed as a business seller on ebay ? really if its his business he should beExcel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?0 -
Something not right about the guy in my view.
He's buying a lot of car's off ebay too then selling them on, would be dubious then to the validity of any of his comments as its unlikely he knows anything about the cars previous use.0 -
He is a liar anyway, he said he had been offered £4400 for it, yet is happy to take your £4100.
How could a dealer know exactly where the vehicle had been driven throughout it's entire life?
Barge pole and don't touch...spring to mind.0 -
Just back out, no issuesI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
