Well to be honest, economics (and finance) is actually pretty simple. If it's complicated, then that's because someone has deliberately made it complicated, and is hiding something in the complication.

At this point you don't want to be touching it, because it's never complicated in *your* favour...

I know it's awful what they are doing to people but what are the answers?

It's a bit like sitting in a barrel, dropping off the Niagra falls. The best thing to do is not get in that situation in the first place.

I seriously think that once these job losses start occurring and all their effects start to be felt we will be in for a very rough time for a long time to come. The government debt is so large that it's hard to keep on topof the interest let alone put a dent in it.

The debt will be defaulted on. It's traditionally the way it has always been done. Whether it is defaulted on by just saying "we're not paying" or defaulted on by making the currency worthless is the choice we have.

We, as a country need to be running a balanced budget by then though. Or suddenly we'll be running a balanced budget whether we like it or not, and the lurch to it will be rather uncomfortable...

ZTD, you need to start a thread entitle 'Finance for Dummies' in which you explain finance to us. I'm sure that Martin would approve, given his desire to get finance taught in schools. ;)

Now, if you can figure out how to explain your way round my spending, you can run the country as far as I am concerned! :rotfl:

But thankfully we have MSE mantras to get us through, I just hope local and central government do their SOAs throughly!

Not only does there have to be SOAs, but there has to be a few LBMs.

Most people/organisations in the country are just thinking "it's going to be a little bit tricky for a couple of years - then PARTY TIME! once more..."

Is it awful. I know a few people who are facing redundancy. One is an ex-teacher so should be re-employable. Another works for the Department of the Environment and feels prospects are bleak.

I've seen a Geologist and a Marine Biologist employed writing applications.

What determines prospects is the wet sloppy blancmange between your ears...

I don't think he would actually.

That's more psychology than economics. You spend to "maximise your consumer surplus" or make yourself happy in other words.

    Simples... ;)

    Hmmm.

I dont think we've even got to the really rough bit yet :(; although there have been a lot of job losses & business closures, many people were still spending & the national situation hadnt really hit so hard in the southern home coutnies, which is where I am.

There are a few smallish local business that are doing well & all trying to support eachother, however there are still empty shops nearby & it's only now that the rises in groceries & clothes are filtering through. I also think that people are stocking up on goods before the rise in VAT which has given a false sense of the public spending on the high street.

I was hoping to quit my second job in 6 months time, but have now decided to keep on as long as the ( already reduced) work is available so I can start saving for that emergency 3 months income we should all have :o

Very true, the number of times I've heard NHS/PCT/LA lately say "temporary" about the budget cuts! *rolls eyes through lack of emoticon*

I too, am of that opinion. I think we still have a "proper" gilt crisis and a "proper" exchange crisis ahead of us. I'm not sure which order - that depends on how "successful" QE is.

Of course at that point we'll be having the PM of the day on the telly talking about "Austerity", "pulling together" and other blah blah stuff like that.

Maybe we should pull together a buzzword bingo game before then?

There's *loads* of closed shops and pubs near where I am. Of course the empty pub situation is often helped by people pulling them down and trying to build houses on them.

I've noticed this too. (and that's being a man and very unaware of how much stuff costs :o ) Shopping in Aldi/Lidl, I've had bills that would have meant I'd bought half the shop a few years ago...

Just be careful you don't damage your entitlement to benefits with that.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't...
