My kitchen bin still smells!!!

We have wheelie bins for compostable waste in our area which like the OP's are emptied fortnightly, and we are asked to wrap food waste in newspaper or paper bags before putting it in the bin. This does help, but I suppose there is always going to be a certain amount of smell in hot weather0
-
If you have space in your freezer, you can bag up waste food and freeze it until the day of the collection. Not ideal, but...0
-
If you've put bleach on the waste food please, please empty it into the main bin.
The waste food collections go off to be composted and if there's bleach in with it the resulting compost will be contaminated and poison any living plant it comes into contact with.
So the solution for you is, chuck it in a black bag and get it in the wheelie bin for the dustmen then give your recycling container a really good scrub out with whatever you normally use to clean your kitchen floors.I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

I wasn't sure where to put this so apologies if it's in the wrong place? Basically my (tall) kitchen bin stinks, even though I empty it once-twice weekly & clean it out with disinfectant. Are there any products or OS things I can also use- maybe powders or air freshners etc? Any tips welcome, thank you.Married my wonderful husband February 2013!:happyhearI want to wear my beautiful wedding dress everyday- it would make shopping so much more fun, I mean, people go shopping in their pyjamas these days.......Must STOP spending!!!Proud to be dealing with my debts!0

My kitchen bin is emptied daily - could you maybe get a smaller one so you empty it more frequently? Other than that how about putting a couple of drops of essential oil into it daily?0
-
Isn't bicarbonate of soda supposed to absorb smells? Perhaps a couple of scoops of that in the bottom of the bin?0
-
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try the bicarbonate of soda over next few days and if no difference I'll have to empty bin more often or buy a smaller one, ta!Married my wonderful husband February 2013!:happyhearI want to wear my beautiful wedding dress everyday- it would make shopping so much more fun, I mean, people go shopping in their pyjamas these days.......Must STOP spending!!!Proud to be dealing with my debts!0

Yes I only have a really small bin and it is emptied twice daily. So no problems with smells. However my re-cycling bin is a different matter....I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
Try washing it with water dosed with bio washing powder (or stardrops) instead of disinfectant.
The feet of a pair of old tights (one inside the other) will hang onto baking powder reasonably well so that you can "hang" them in the bin and not lose your baking powder every time the bin gets emptied.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I empty my kitchen bin once a month. It takes a 35L rubbish bag.
Anything that goes in (it's mostly packaging)is either clean already,or washed if soiled.
No foodstuffs go in it.
Any fruit and veg peelings/cores/skins etc go on the compost.
I do have a folded piece of kitchen roll on the bottom of the bin,and on this I add a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil.Sometimes there is a slightly stale smell from the bin,but it's not unpleasant.
I only change the bag once a month because I want to reduce waste,so most itemsare scrunched, flattened, tied up or squeezed to death.Plastic packing can take up a huge amount of room if you're not careful.
So,I would suggest:
-only put washed out packaging/containers in the bin ie yoghurt cartons, tetrapack containers etc
-don't put food in the bin.If you have no choice, then put it in a seperate plastic bag and then knot it.
-as has been mentioned, bicarb is a great deodorizer.
