I agree with bicarb at the bottom, and clean it out more often - hot water once a week should do, with a bit of stardrops or bleach if necessary. Not that I take my own advice of course!!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • I use a very small sprinkle of Neutradol bin fresh. It cost £1 for a fairly large tub in farm Foods and I bought it months ago but still have plenty left. I tend to put it in the actual bin bag when it gets about half full.

uh huh... I do the hot water thing whenever I notice a smell... which I know is lazy but it's just that it's always me who has to do it

I will put bicarb in the bottom now and see how it goes

cheers for the super quick responses!

  • After the Bicarb or Neutradol, put a fresh lining of newspaper at the bottom of the bin, to absorb any small amounts of liquid that may be on the garbage, each time you empty the bin.

I assume it's something wet making it smell? I empty my bin every week to 10 days as there's only me and it's never been smelly. It had a wet bottom once (the bin :p) when I chucked something in that wasn't quite dry which I think caused the problem, so now I just make sure that nothing wet goes in it and if it has to, I wrap it up in a bag or newspaper.

I find the best way to avoid a smelling bin is to make sure that food scraps go into a separate plastic bag and not into the main bin. I only put the food scraps into the bin when the bin is full and it's time to put it in the communal skip in the basement. Result=no whiffy bins:)
  • Putting a newspaper pad at the bottom before putting your bin liner in really helps to stop the bin getting slimy and smelly :) and its cheap too!

  • Hi all,

I'm on a mission to find the 'odd smell' which is in my house and I've cleaned the bin. It STANK  therefore I now want to keep it smelling nice... aside from educating my OH in taking any loose items from the bottom when he sees them... what can I stick in the bin to make it smell nice?

Would those 'odor bin' thingys be worth buying?

I've so far cleaned it with zoflora and cleaned every inch so it sparkles... any ideas would be very welcome! :j

    H

I put a couple of sheets of kitchen roll in the bottom of the bin, sprinkled with zoflora and then put the bag on top - works every time for me!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • Have a smaller bin and wash it out every time you empty.

We also use carrier bags and have never had the smelly bin issue.l

Never put food waste in the bin solves the problem. Ours goes in the food recycle bin but I know its not so simple if you don't have one.. maybe as someone else suggests keep food waste in a separate bag and then just dump in dustbin daily
