Not sure if this the right place to post this but seeing as I'm after cheap, cheerful and effective I thought this would be as good as any.

In Manchester we have green recycling bins for food and garbage waste. There only emptied every two weeks so in the recent hot weather they have really started to honk! To make mights worse the bin men drove past our house last week and didn't empty it so its really bad now!

Any suggestions on how to make it less offensive smelling. I stuck some cheap bleach in it which worked for a few hours but other than that made no difference.

How about sprinkling some bicarb in the bottom? It's good for getting rid of smells in the fridge and I also use it like shake and vac on the carpets where the dog likes to sit.

In our borough if you phone up and say they missed your house they will come back for it. (We used to have to do that a lot as our entrance is off a side drive and the cart that did the block of flats further up the drive assumed the cart doing the main road would pick up our stuff and vice versa).

If it's really getting on a bit that's the only thing that will really help for more than an hour or so
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Think that you have to phone up the day of the collection so that they have a chance to tell the lorry to turn around to pick it up.

Can't really help apart from suggesting that when it is emptied you give it a REALLY good scrub out so that you can start afresh.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

do they give you liners? if they don't ask them which ones you can use - its usually the cornstarch bags - this may help a bit - you will probably have to buy them

We have the green liners but i think stuff is just decaying anyhow due to the heat etc.

Bit annoyed they missed our bin as its on a major road into Manchester so it isn't easy to miss! Will definitely call next time.

Thanks for the links to the other threads :)

i've read with interest about your food waste bins (we don't have them in my area of the city and other recycling!!! shocking, i know!). i do feel guilty of disposing food waste in my normal collection as i know it's one of the main culprits for making the bin smell, and that worse still, on landfill sites. altho' i have cats, i don't give them raw meat, or bones, or fat as i feel it isn't appropriate for their diet, but it would be great if it could be utilised somehow (i don't want a bokashi bin, firstly too expensive and secondly, have a normal composter already). anyone with any ideas? it's not good that we waste so much oil/fatty residue in our bins too.. can anything can be done about this other than taking this to a oil recycling place that uses chip fat and convert it into car fuel???!!
