Why do adults have to eat around supermarkets?

So for you the line is drawn thus....
You can not eat in any shop that does not sell food...but if a shop sells food you feel it is acceptable to eat it whilst walking around and not having yet paid for it?
Does the 'class' of store matter?....i.e Would you walk round Asda's eating pork pie that you had taken off the shelf?...If so ...would you walk around Harrods eating Quails Eggs that you had just taken off the shelf - or is that less acceptable?0 -
That's quite a god question Mrs_justjohn
Perhaps certain people feel MR. A is their second home so feel relaxed enough to walk round it eating what they fancy?
And never mind their grubby fingers on a bag of grapes someone else might want to buyI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I'll bet the people who think it's wrong to give a young child a grape or two to pacify them would be the first to moan about screaming 'brats' too. Have these people had children?
What folk fail to realise is taste-testing a solitary grape or eating two or three going around the store, is a massive amount of THEFT when you consider the number of other customers doing the same thing. Why do you think prices are so ruddy high!

Or cut a slice from a melon/pineapple too?
I am just playing devils advocate here because I actually don't think that what you do is the end of the world....but where do you draw the line?
One of the check-out operators weighed up four bananas then handed over three as she removed a banana skin from the conveyor. When the customer complained, the till-girl smiled sweetly & said 'I thought you meant to pay for the one your child had eaten ' & carried on with the rest of the shopping :T The woman did try to report the girl, got very short shrift from the customer services desk & hurried out very red-faced. It was a l-o-n-g time before she came back to the store, & she came alone
With regards to the spillage--if something is on the shop floor, the store can be held responsible of poor house-keeping & can be closed if too many incidents occur.
Also, I have no way of knowing that you will be paying for your impromptu snack. While some of you will be honest, a good few more will not & that increases the costs we all have to pay. These boards are heaving with folk moaning about the amount of wastage around the back of any given supermarket, but the sad fact is that a large % of that wastage is caused by the customer. Fresh chilled & frozen foods are found in the most strangest of places & cannot be put back on the shelf as the store has no idea how long they've been out of a controlled temperature. Some parents allow their children to 'help' but will put the damaged packet back & take another--it is truly amazing what people will do...
And in any case, to get back on topic, it's just bad manners to wander around grazing like a cow chewing the cud!

Yes, I have had three children with less than four years between eldest & youngest & No, I didn't give them things from the shelf to pacify either!

This is Oh-So-True & I have to admit I was a grape taster before working in a shop & seeing how my 'one little grape' could easily amount to several kilos in just one day.

Another voice of reason - Hoorah!!0 -
Many builders and plumbers merchants and garages have coffee vending machines. Is it disgusting and uncouth to use these machines as you shop? Or does it mean that the people using such places are low-life scum?0

They aren't. Prices today are lower than they ever have been, selection is far wider than before. Also, I have no way of knowing that you will be paying for your impromptu snack.
You have no way of telling if any customer is paying for anything. While some of you will be honest, a good few more will not & that increases the costs we all have to pay.
Any evidence for that, other than pulling it out of thin air? Do you assume that about every customer? These boards are heaving with folk moaning about the amount of wastage around the back of any given supermarket, but the sad fact is that a large % of that wastage is caused by the customer.
Just putting the word "fact" in a sentence doesn't make it so.
The reason for the huge amounts of spoilage in supermarkets is not down to people picking up food and leaving it. It's because every single consumer expects every product, whether that be a bag of rice or fresh precut pineapple and mango mix, to be ready, waiting on the shelf for them to buy.
The supermarkets spend a huge amount of time and money trying to predict the whim of the consumer. The penalty for understocking - turning customers away - is high. Not only do you lose the profit you could have made, you lose your customers to other supermarkets. The penalty for overstocking - throwing away food - is much lower, you simply lose the food at cost.
Frozen goods are right down at the bottom of the pile when it comes spoilage. You get weeks to guess when they aren't selling and reduce accordingly. The fresh precut pineapple and mango, you have 24 hours to do this.0 -
How rude!!!
I have " a life " thank you, but also have the ability as a grown adult to manage not to eat whilst I am shopping!
Crikey, If you think my last was rude then you obviously have lived a very sheltered life!
So everyone should live by your standards and be on the moral high ground which you position yourself should they ? I'm sure those people who do eat in supermarkets have far greater abilities than you'd imagine or does it put those people amongst the 'low-life' because they eat in supermarkets ?
Amazing how people can become upset at things that don't inpinge on themselves or others.0 -

It appears so, you could be drinking the coffee, buy untreated lumber because you don't have mental capacity to drink and shop, and then cause the collapse of some upmarket decking.
In addition, you may not be wearing the correct attire to go shopping - you may be wearing a t-shirt, or possibly even track suit bottoms - so in all likelihood, despite being a hard-working, tax-paying man, people will perceive you as being a benefit-dodging, weed-smoking jobless moron. Don't mention you do one of those jobs that involves your hands, or speak using local dialect, as you may be lynched.0 -

I would guess there is a better chance of getting away with theft if you have eaten the evidence, rather than trying to get out the store with a sandwich stuffed up your jumper. Also if many people are eating whilst shopping you would 'blend in' and not look suspicious -- where as if shops banned it then it would always look like intent to commit theft.
If someone less than honest was approached whilst eating items not yet paid for, and asked if they intended to pay, then the answer would undoubtedly be 'Yes of course I am'. If however they were not approached would the temptation to just put the wrapper behind the boxes of cornflakes and get a free lunch be too much?
Now I am not stating that everyone eating in supermarkets are thieves (obviously!) but why should shops run the risk?
Anyhow my gripe really is that it is just bad manners..!!0 -
now now people at the end of the day if you choose to eat in a supermarket or not is your choice, i myself would prefer that such individuals who do find it necessary to eat in a supermarket or any other establishment( other than those who are designed for eating), to have a bit more respect for other people(shoppers /staff etc, ok so you want to eat and you dont care cause you dont think it affects anyone else's life you are going to do it anyway! SO be it! you must be so proud( insert roley eyes) I on the otherhand will respect the rules of supermarkets and other establishments that do not allow eating/drinking/smoking because its the right thing to do! and I'm considerate of others!LOVE isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live WITHOUT0
