what if you can't afford your pets?

I have the most gorgeous little ginger fluffy cat, I got him from a rescue centre when he was 6 months old and he is the apple of my eye. I would sell everything I owned, pimp out my boyfriend and myself, take out loans, whatever. If he needs the care or the treatment, meds whatever, he'll damn well get it.
Isn't this what insurance is for though?
I can't believe that someone would have there dog put to sleep because they couldn't afford the care. Wouldn't you exhaust every other avenue first? Honestly.
Some conditions are not covered by insurancebut I agree PTS should be THE last option

It is about making an informed decision as to that animal's current state of health, mind, quality of care that it currently receives and how it would/will react if taken to a new home away from it's surroundings and put in to a completely different atmosphere.
I've already PM that person and said I totally agree with them and their decision.
Our old cat must be at least 17 years old, over active thyroid, renal failure, currently costing £50 per month for 3 lots of tablets plus £ 24-50 per month (which gets us 20% off her tablets hence only £50pm) which cover flea, worming, blood tests, vacs etc for 2 cats.
I've already told the vets if she gets anything else wrong with her then I would make the decision to PTS, partly down to financial reasons and partly down to the fact that better to be a day too early than a day too late and thus seeing this lovely gorgeous old lady be in pain every day for the rest of her living days.
Rehoming her is simply not an option. Who would want an old cat that costs at least £50 per month just for tablets, £50 every 6 months for thyroid tests, £20 every 3 months for the 3-monthly check up so that the vet can give me her tablets.
Edit to add - we cant get help from PDSA as we dont claim housing benefit
She's an old lady who was a stray in an old derelict outhouse and she's had 3 n half years of happiness and love. She is in such a set routine with food, sleep, litter trays, cuddles, pets and everything ... you name it and she has a set time of day for it and you're in for it that day or the next day if you so much as dare to upset her routine ... this is a cat who will throw up furballs and throw up if she does not get her own way ...(my OH didnt believe me either till she did it for 3 nights running and each night I told him that I would have sick to clean up in the morning. He believes me now!)0 -
I never realised that! That is absolutely fantastic news. Please would you let us all have a list of organisations and their phone numbers in case of an emergency situation where we find ourselves in financial dire straits and with a desperately sick animal which we don't have the funds to pay for veterinary care? I don't expect the list to be superlong or anything, but even two or three contacts of organisations which will take an animal in the situation we are talking about here, and definitely not kill it would be wonderful
Thank you in advance. And I'll thank you again when you supply the list.
Of course. All it takes to find such organizations is a bit of intelligence, which is sadly lacking in many pet owners.
1. Farplace Animal Rescue Ltd is a registered charity (no 1126812) dedicated to animal rescue and rehabilitation (company no 4397258). Head office - Sidehead,Westgate, County Durham, DL13 1LE, Tel: 01388 517397, Website: https://www.farplace.org.uk
2. Forest Dog Rescue: If you have a dog that you would like FDR to take in Telephone 01299 825287 (ONLY BETWEEN 9AM AND 6PM) homing@forestdogrescue.org.uk
I'm sure that given the time and inclination that any decent pet owner in the situation that you describe would move heaven and earth to find an organization like the above, to help their pet. Wouldn't they?
Obviously you have been in this situation from the tone of your post, so why don't you post the details of the organization that you used? Or did you just kill the animal without really trying and attack me because to make yourself feel better?0 -

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong! I have never "had an animal killed" without really trying.
Thanks for your great list of two organisations. That's really helpful.0 -
So instead of rehoming with an organization that would pay for his treatment and ensure that he got a good home, you'd have him killed? That is completely insane. In fact I would go as far to say that if you actually would do this, then you should not be allowed to have any pets.
What how dare you say such a thing:mad:.
The fear of someone not giving your dog the same love and care that you give is frightening. It would make me so worried if i had to give up Buddy.
I have in the last 7 months paid out of my savings over £3000 for sorting out Buddys illness. Thankfully we are getting on top of it and the cost are staring to come down, so it should be approx £1000 - £1500 per year soon. Ive been doing carboot sales, selling all sorts and entering all competitions so that if i win, i can sell that too. The last big thing for me to get rid of will be the car, and thats not worth much but it will pay for a year of treatment at least. I would go to the ends of the earth for my dog, and ive had alot of people comment to me personally that they wouldnt keep a dog that needs so much medical attention as what Buddy does.0 -

Although I no longer have the dogs concerned, at one time my will stated that in the event of my husband and I dying together two of the dogs were to join us and the rest would be rehomed with or by friends and family.
Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a dog.
If these people are really destitute I cannot understand why the PDSA won't help them, and everything else aside the last thing you need when you are down is to lose a beloved pet.
There will be someone that can help them to keep the dog. If they were my friends then my efforts would be in that direction not trying to persuade them to give up the dog.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -

Goood grief I hope I'm never under your care and have the misfortune of getting too ill or expensive "One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Surely if they're in such dire need they'll be entitled to help from the PDSA. What benefits are they on? If not on benefits what income do they have (not prying here, just trying to figure out if they're entitled, since situations like this are what the PDSA are for)?
If their vet wont allow credit, tell them to call every single vet in the area and see if any of those have payment plans.
I didn't delve into their monthly income and outgoings as I am more of an neighbour than a friend iyswim but I have dogs so they asked for my advice. She told me that PDSA can't help and that they are on a dmp so they have NO access to any credit facilities. They don't have any family or friends they could ask (her words not mine) and she wanted to know what I thought would be the best option. They certainly wouldn't even consider having their pet pts and I would be amazed to know a vet would do this if an animal wasn't sick:mad:, the dog needs dental treatment which is apparently quite common for the breed but it costs a fortune and is NOT covered by insurance, if the dog doesn't have it then I assume the teeth will rot or fall out so it could become medical.
I have volunteered many times in rescue and whilst I am horrified at the thought of someone even considering their animals being pts for anything other than a medical reason I can assure you that there are definately worse things that can happen to animals than being pts!0 -
My neighbour had a 14 year old cat,Lucky.A few month's ago I came home & he told me he'd had her put down as she was being sick.He took her to the vets who came back & said her bloodwork ect was normal.
He rang the CPL to see if they'd take her but they were full but did'nt try where I got Daisy from, the ASSISI.
He had pet insurance but did'nt give the cat a chance imho.I cant get it out of my mind what he done,I saw Lucky the day before & she was OK.I think that he just wanted rid of her.0 -
oh my god have you actually read my post correctly?
I should have explained clearer: the breed rescue have actually told me, after discussions of his ailments, that they would not be able to rehome him and they would probably have put him to sleep. His previous owners were going to put him to sleep because of his ailments. Rescues that I help with have said they would probably have put him to sleep because he would be a financial liability.
Would I have racked up vet bills if I wanted to have him put to sleep?? Would he be fed the diet he is fed if I wanted to put him sleep? JEez, seriously people, read threads before making comments I am not a fit dog owner please.
If you want more information on his ailments and allergies please PM me and I can give you a full list of treatment of what he has had in the 6 years I have owned him, plus I can tell you how much i have spent on him.0
