Why? That's deranged.0 -
cos he has chronic skin ailments that insurance wont pay out for and it can get quite severe at certain times of the year. He also has to eat a specialist diet. It only takes for a piece of meat or cheese for his allergies to flair up x
Deranged yes, but I love him x0 -

So instead of rehoming with an organization that would pay for his treatment and ensure that he got a good home, you'd have him killed? That is completely insane. In fact I would go as far to say that if you actually would do this, then you should not be allowed to have any pets.0 -
I can only comment on what I would do in my own circumstances. My first port of call would be to ask the vet if he would consider offering me monthly repayments. Luckily I know the vet pretty well and I feel sure that he would give me a fair hearing. Unfortunately for him though he has also been scammed and lost out financially because others have abused his trust.
If the scenario with the vet didn't pan out then I'd have no issue with using a credit card to pay all or part of the debt. However I don't actually have a credit card because I used it so infrequently the bank closed it for me, but I'd trawl this site to see what card I could get. There is also my overdraft available, which I wouldn't hesitate to use.
Thirdly I'd sell anything I could, for quick cash a car boot sale would be useful, otherwise I'd ebay stuff including clothes, shoes, jewellery, paintings etc.
I have been having unemployment problems recently so know it's incredibly hard to get a job with decent hours to make ends meet. Unfortunately there is no PDSA near me, so that's not an option.
I don't know if I could get my cats rehomed - one is on medication for life, one is quite old and one is exceptionally timid. If one or all of them were so sick and I couldn't afford to pay for the care then what would be my choices? Who would take on an animal requiring expensive medical treatment when there is a multitude of perfectly healthy animals available at rescue centres up and down the country? Wouldn't rescue organisations go straight to PTS if such a sick animal was left with them - they have to use the limited funds they have to help a lot of needy animals? Like myothercarisaferrari mentioned the PTS option would have to be considered as it might actually be the only option.0 -

Let's not sugarcoat it, it's not 'putting to sleep' in cases such as these, it's killing. There are always rescue organizations that will take an animal and not kill it.
What myothercarisaferrari was saying is that if they couldn't keep their dogs, they'd have them killed. That's nothing short of psychotic.0 -
Surely if they're in such dire need they'll be entitled to help from the PDSA. What benefits are they on? If not on benefits what income do they have (not prying here, just trying to figure out if they're entitled, since situations like this are what the PDSA are for)?
If their vet wont allow credit, tell them to call every single vet in the area and see if any of those have payment plans.Sigless0 -

I never realised that! That is absolutely fantastic news. Please would you let us all have a list of organisations and their phone numbers in case of an emergency situation where we find ourselves in financial dire straits and with a desperately sick animal which we don't have the funds to pay for veterinary care? I don't expect the list to be superlong or anything, but even two or three contacts of organisations which will take an animal in the situation we are talking about here, and definitely not kill it would be wonderful
Thank you in advance. And I'll thank you again when you supply the list.0 -
This is why I don't have/won't have pets. Any pet is a 12-15 year commitment of time, effort and cash. I've never felt that I could guarantee to keep that commitment, so I don't have a pet. The needs of the animal should come before your own needs to have something lovely and fluffy.... and you can often borrow a neighbour's pet for free.0

I have the most gorgeous little ginger fluffy cat, I got him from a rescue centre when he was 6 months old and he is the apple of my eye. I would sell everything I owned, pimp out my boyfriend and myself, take out loans, whatever. If he needs the care or the treatment, meds whatever, he'll damn well get it.
Isn't this what insurance is for though?
I can't believe that someone would have there dog put to sleep because they couldn't afford the care. Wouldn't you exhaust every other avenue first? Honestly.0
