I haven't got pets as I wouldn't be willing to pay huge vets fees, and so it wouldn't be fair on them for me to take them on without being able/willing to help them if something happened.0

Ask the Vet if they can pay weekly, ask parents or friends if they can help. I myself would sell anything I could lay my hands on if it were my dog friend. Thinking about it I would send hubby out on the street if need be.
I knew when we brought him into our family that one day we might need to spend on Vets bills and of course other things. we took all this into account and made arrangements to cover this for the next however many years. After all our dog didnt ask to come and live with us did he. I hope it turns out well for the dog and the family.

oooh this post is about me obviously:D
I have two dogs and I live on 9p noodles, water and loads of fruit:D:p
I was in the situation earlier this year where one of my dogs had to have an operation and it cost over £700. I was honest with the vets and they have been brilliant. My mum gave me a bit towards it and it is now down to £436, I'm paying it off monthly.:D0 -
Yes our vets was very understanding too, they actually have a big sign in the waiting room saying "no credit, all treatment must be paid for on the day etc etc" but still arranged to let us pay it off over months, so please get your friend to actually ask their vet (not just presume they won't because this is their normal line) if they havent already.
If there was literally nothing i could do, then yes as a last resort i would give the pet up rather than see it suffer, but this would have to be the absolute last resort.0 -

They aren't eligible unfortunately they have checked. They also asked the vets directly and were told no credit:(
They obviously never envisaged they would be in this situation and I know they are absolutely devastated so I won't pass on the recommendations to sell their souls as judging by what I have seen today they have already done this to feed their children:(:(:(0 -
I think this is a valid question and certainly one which I can relate to.
I rescued a dog and it transpired that he had/has a serious heart condition - common for the breed but was angry that the rescue place didn't think to tell me.
He needs daily medication which comes to £40 a month (and no, I couldn't afford to insure him on top of that as the insurance premuins would make your eyes water). This year has been horrendous for me health wise and I was on half pay for a couple of months which completely threw my budget to the dogs (pardon the pun) and I am afraid there is the odd week where he is running low and I can't afford them until the following week.
Few weeks ago he started walking funny and his eyes were darting all over the place and throwing up constant....straight down the vets and he had this thing (can't remember the name but something to do with the ears) and it was a pretty expensive trip followed by 2 follow ups. How did I pay? I used my mortgage money...not the best but he needed it and I am now saving every penny to make up the missed payment.
I love my pets I really do (have a bunny too) but sometimes it's not a case of 'selling your soul'...sometimes it's a case that things happen that you don't anticipate.0 -

I agree, they aren't some reckless family who bought their dog on a whim they have just had a horrible time0
