Stopping smoking - yes again!

Thought I'd join in. Gave up smoking on the 20th of February. I'm going cold turkey. Tried the whole patches thing before and it was awful so I'm going to use the power of self control!:rotfl:
Anyway, I'm at uni tomorrow for the first time in two weeks so I'm dreading it. Too used to lighting up as soon as I finish lectures. I'm going to try my very best though.Pardonez mois, mais votre cheval est dans mon cochon d'inde.

As soon as you finish lectures, try going straight to the library or canteen or other place where you're not allowed to smoke. Not being allowed to have a crafty one might make it a bit easier. Well done to both flipped27 and petetidball. You are doing so well, keep it up.
Just a note flipped27, I obviousy don't know for sure, but maybe it might be the patches and lozenges that are making you feel a bit ill. If you try reducing your strength and maybe just try one or the other. I'm not 100% sure, but you might be getting too much nicotine that what you are used to. Just a thought.0 -
Thought I'd add to this. I'm still not smoking although i do get strong urges sometimes. Especially if i'm in the pub. Can't wait for the ban now just so i'm not so tempted. Can't remember how long it is without looking back through this thread lol. About 7 or 8 weeks i think.
I'm also on a diet now as i put on so much weight very very quickly by stuffing my face. Lost 5 pounds so far only another 5 to go....
Well done everyone else. xLast bet : 26th Oct 2006:j Debt free 25th Feb 2008:j Living "my" dream:T0 -
Well I managed to go all day yesterday (even with my mum visiting, that was HARD.....) and today without my emergency lozenge!:T
This evening I took my patch off as I felt soooo ill and i haven't had it on since 7pm which i think is excellent....maybe it was making me feel ill......
Thanks for all the advice, I am feeling really positive about the whole thing (although still wish i didn't feel so rough!)
I am off to stop smoking clinic on tuesday so think will ask if i can reduce my patch......
can'tcope, I was really worried about putting on weight but (this i find strange) I am eating so much less than before?! Doesn't make sense.....last time i gave up i put on 5 stone (ok i was pregnant...)0 -
I'm about to quit smoking - again. I'd stopped for over 4 yrs and started up again at a stressful time - how stupid is that
I'm going to sign up at the local stop smoking clinic - wish me luck!

Good Luck Pam.
I dont know if this is of interest to anyone but in my local gazette (thurrock) this week there's a voucher you can take to your pharmacist for 5 weeks worth of nrt. for the price of a prescription. might suit people who don't want to go to the docs for their nrt.... if you are prescription charge exempt you get it free.
I'm lucky my doc just writes me out a script for patches without making me go to the clinic and i am exempt from charges.Last bet : 26th Oct 2006:j Debt free 25th Feb 2008:j Living "my" dream:T0 -
Hi All!
Well I was pleasantly surprised to see this thread this morning, as today is my Quit Day. I had my last cig yesterday at 4.15pm. I have tried to stop smoking before but it was all very half hearted.
At 33, I only started smoking at 27 when my marriage started to go down the pan. Up til 27 I had never so much as puffed on a cig. Yes, I feel stupid, but it's easy to be wise on hindsight.
Anyway, the reason I have decided to stop for good, is firstly, my health (had a few too many chest infections since 2004 and there is nothing quite like the feeling of not being able to breathe, to make me seriously consider what I am doing to myself. I also want to quit because the house stinks!
The last time I quit, I went to a friend's house, both she and her husband smoke, and it hit me how stinky it is in a house - partic. stale smoke.
Since starting again, I have been smoking in the kitchen with the fan on!
However, at lunchtime I am going to the supermarket to buy a couple of candles to sort out this smell!
And finally, of course, I am quitting because of the money.
SO it's been 19 hrs since my last ciggie and I have saved £2.72 today not having bought a pack of 10.
So far I am feeling fine. I would have had 3 cigs this morning so far.
One last thing, I have read that you can feel a bit depressed when you have stopped smoking..however, over recent weeks I have felt depressed while smoking. Can anyone suggest why that is?
Oh and finally, I noticed a bit of brown nicotine stain on the back of my teeth - has anyone who has quit noticed this start to clean up after not smoking for a while?
Thanks, all, and good luck to anyone else who has stopped. I think I'm gonna be on this thread for a while!

Hi Suki
Congrats on stopping!
I have a brown nicotine stain on one of my canines, since stopping no amount of brushing with smokers/whitening toothpaste has managed to get rid of it I'm afraid. I am considering getting my teeth properly polished because it really bugs me.
It has probably got lighter since I stopped but you don't notice it when it's gradual do you?
Anyway
Good luck

Hi Rich,
Thank you for the good luck wishes. I'm on the nicotine gum this morning - which I hope to use for the first week. I bought patches, but the thing for me is that I feel I need something to do to replace having a fag, so when I get the craving, I chew gum.
I hope that this will be it for good now.
Re. nicotine stains - have you tried Eucryl powder? It's becoming harder to find now, but this is probably most effective. I had the stains "sand blasted off" by a hygienist a year ago, and given my appalling fear of the dentist and all things dental, I didn't like it one bit, although they do get the stains off. Just didn't like the feeling of having it done with the bits flying everywhere!
Using Eucryl twice a week with your regular toothpaste does help, although I decided there was little point in doing this without stopping smoking completely.
