No. Cigs smoked before giving up 20 p.d.
Methods tried in the past Willpower, Willpower + Allen Carr*, Willpower + Neil Casey*
Method succeeded with: N Casey on 2nd attempt with him. I had quit for about 3 months with his book before, but had started again.

*Both of these books imply that you don't need willpower to stop with them, however, willpower is the desire to stop smoking. If you didn't want to stop, I don't believe that these books would make you. Therefore I believe that the claim that you 'don't need willpower' is ridiculous.

Are you the ONLY one Richyrich? This doesn't bode well for the ditherers! But it's excellent you've stayed off the cigs - very, very, well done.

I'd still like to hear from the others who tried to give up as I'm sure to learn something from their experiences.

AFAIK Squirrel Tufty and TNG have both successfully quit too (last I heard they had anyway). I'd be interested in progress reports as well; it's nice to hear how people are doing.

But if you want to stop, it doesn't matter if anyone else has managed it or not. You have to want to do it for yourself, so if you want to quit, go for it. You'll feel better in yourself, and your wallet will get heavier too!

Still here, couple of 'blips' but mainly as DP was still smoking but.......

Tonight he finished the Allen Carr book I got him, and threw the pack he had at me and said 'Get rid of those for me'

    He's quit :T

Hope it sticks this time

    Keep it up guys!

    Last cigarette :30 October 2006
No. Cigs smoked before giving up: 30 a day
Methods tried in the past: Half hearted attempts with patches (never even made it through a day!) Allan Carr, Neil Casey, willpower
Method succeeded with: Zyban in conjunction with an NHS stop smoking group thingy but in all honesty think it was mostly Allan Carr and Neil Casey books that led to me succeeding as I needed the shift in mindset. For the first time ever I researched what smoking does to you and actually allowed myself to take it all in rather than block it out and think it wouldn't happen to me!

For the ditherers, I didn't think I would ever be able to stop, I thought I was weak and it was just all way too hard. I'm not just saying that in retrospect, I was terrified I would be a smoker forever. I could easily smoke 40 some days without even realising it, I was horribly addicted.

Quitting is the best thing I have ever ever done though, I'm coming up to three months and honestly I rarely ever think about cigarettes now and mostly if I do it's "ooh, I am so glad I don't need to stand outside in the rain right now to smoke!" It wasn't easy the first few weeks but all of a sudden you realise that you've done it and you don't smoke anymore and ooh, it's a fantastic feeling! :j

Good luck to you all! I know people say it all the time but if I can do it then you really can!
  • I am still doing marvellously - less obsessed about updating my sig now, which I think is a good thing (updated now though).

I think Richy is right about willpower, in the sense that you need willpower to buy and read the books (AC in my case, NC or both for others). I was hooked for 20 odd years, and tried every other method apart from zyban.

Anyway at the risk of boring people to tears (again!:rotfl:), AC worked for me, and I haven't had a single craving since 03/09/06.

    • we've been brainwashed into believing that it's difficult and painful to quit
    • I am a French Poodle and I like salted peanuts
    • with NRT you're merely substituting one form of nicotine intake with another, and continuing to feed the addiction
    • I live in a tree hollow with my miniature pony
    • the process of nicotine withdrawal lasts a VERY short time - it will be difficult if you believe it will be difficult, but the book helps to undo the brainwashing, so that it becomes easy and pleasurable to stop

Once I realised that the addiction is so mild and it is only my head that tells me otherwise it wasn't a problem. I don't like to be told what to do by anyone, even my own head!! Also, one comment on here somewhere said that they refused to be beaten by a plant, which also helps to remember at times!!

I have a cold now, the first one since I quit, I was hoping that it wouldn't make me feel so ill. Oh well. :(

Good luck and well done to all those quitters! :T

July 1st represents nothing but the removal of freedom of choice from citizens by the government. And I say that as a non-smoker.
Maybe, I know it's the classic cliched argument - but as a non smoker what about my choice to go out and not breathe in second hand smoke? Don't say I can choose to go to a non-smoking pub/club because that's not realistic (yet) unless I want to go out alone. Smokers can now choose to go outside and light up...or not. I can also choose to start smoking again or remain a non-smoker. This is the best thing the Govt. has done in a long time, although I do wonder why they're so keen to do it, especially as they make so much money from cigarettes.

Can i join this thread please? I have tried and tried to give up and am now on my umpteenth attempt.

Today is my 18th day as a non smoker and i still get cravings, sometimes really strong ones. I am using the patches ( i had some left from my last attempt).

I am also going to get a latch hook rug kit to keep my hands busy in the evenings. Any other tips from people who have been quit longer?

I just feel like i need to be doing something all of the time as when i sit down i want a cigarette.
