Stopping smoking - yes again!

  • Hi Everyone,

I'm going to give up smoking again tomorrow. Yes I know I'm on here every so often giving up and then all goes quiet, but I really have to do it. Health wise obviously and money wise £5.60 odd for 20!!

I'll keep you all informed on how I get on and if anyone else fancies joining me and having another stab then great.

I will put my no smoking money in my savings for xmas, as it has been worrying me about how to afford it!

    Y&R x

Best of luck with the no smoking mate - I'm going to have a go too. I spend something like £200 per month on fags!! That has to be so so silly - so much cash and I'll die too.

Only bit of advice (well it works for me) is use nicotine replacement i.e Gum or patches and here's the money saing angle!!!! Go to your doctors and get prescriptions for the gum, patches etc - so not only stopping smoking will save you a fortune ou can save £12 on every box og gum or patches. and of course the practice nurse will ususal give you advice and booklets and encouragment too.

    Good luck again.
  • if I can cut down to 10 a day on my own I can probably do the rest.
That's the approach I'm taking. I was on 40 a day and I'm now down to 10 (apart from a bit of backsliding on Christmas Day).

The way I see it, there are two things you can influence:
1: The time between waking up and having you first fag.
2: The average time between fags.

So, I set up a spreadsheet that lets me input my target times for these two, along with the time I get up. It then tells me when I'm "allowed" a fag. Gradually increasing the times reduces the target number of fags for each day. I'm now working to plateau at 10 for a week or so then start reducing to 5.

My ultimate goal is to be quit when we move into our new house on Jan 30th. 40 a day = £11*365 = £4015 a year!

Yeah, 30-40 a day (not the cheap ones though), which is why I was so amazed at how effective the Allen Carr book was, because I really thought I didn't stand a chance of quitting.

  • Hi All,

Hope you don't mind me joining in this thread. I am planning to quit on 1st Jan. (Don't know why, I jut needed a goal to prepare myself for) I have bought an Allen Carr Book today so have yet to start reading it, but I will be honest,... I am so scared, the more I think about quitting, the more I want a ciggie. I haven't read this whole thread from start to finish, but I will do before I start my book, so well done to all that have been nicotine free for how ever long and I am so envious of you at this moment.

    Wish me luck.

Give yourself a couple of days undisturbed to read the book. Don't be put off by the repetitiveness - it all helps it to sink in. Good luck!

some suggestions that have worked for people i know!
    a) make sure you have a goodie waiting or planned for..... ie a treat for doing so well........ at a set point in time
    b) start exercising even if it is only a walk to the shop to buy ciggies......... make it a longer and round the block
    c) put the equivalent money (not sepnt of ciggies) into a money box...... watch it mount up.......
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

I've read the 1st Alan Carr book, which is excellent but doesn't quite get onto the secret of how to quit (unless I missed it) but now have the 2nd, well worth reading as you give up. Carr isn't into the NRT (Gum & Patches thing) but I think I will go for the book/gum combo!

Good luck if you're giving up, we seem to have a forum to support each other!

Fidgety, twitchy, restless. Yep sounds familiar! But it's not unpleasant is it? Stick with it, and enjoy the experience!
