Just a thought but could you maybe learn to drive, to give him an indication that you are planning and preparing to move to the town he wants to go to? Not saying a bigger morgage is better, just so he thinks his preferences are still on the table. x

It's a good idea and as soon as I move home it is the first thing that I am going to do. We can't afford driving lessons over here.

or at least suggest that when you move to your family town you would have spare cash from the smaller mortgage/rent to pay for driving lessons (and family who would babysit the kids while you learn) in preparation for the move to the nicer town

First off. Have paid £355 off my Virgin Credit Card so that is nearly gone!!! I will keep that card as they often offer 0% deals and I can also transfer the money into my bank account so if I ever needed £7,000 on a temporary basis it is good to have.

Had a good long chat with OH last night and I think we have sorted most things out. He is going to go for compressed hours as he really wants to move into another sector in work and get experience there for a year. So the plan is: to apply for compressed hours, for me to move back in December and for him to commute from Jan 2012. He will push to get into the other team and do that for a year (as there are loads of jobs in that area in Ireland). In that time we won't look at any other jobs in Ireland and will let him concentrate on that.

We will also be saving money as I will live with my parents and will save for a deposit on a modest house (he finally agrees this is a good idea and is quite excited about it).

We both agree that he will have more quality time with us if he has a Friday off every week. I am going to learn how to drive straight away so we can head off for the day, or go to his parents for the weekend. OH is also going to spend Mon-Wed evening studying, going to the cinema/gigs or playing music. He said that he is not worried about being lonely as study will take up a lot of time. He is going to move back to our old flat and take in a Monday-Friday lodger. This will free up more money and we can do up the flat a bit. It has a new kitchen, bathroom etc so it just needs to be painted and brightened up really.

Then in Jan 2013 he will look for jobs in the new sector that he has trained in.

Phew - hope that makes sense and that it all works out!

Yes, I feel tons better that I have a move date and I also don't feel guilty because I know OH really wants to pursue this area of work and it is only something he will be able to do if he stays with his current company. I also know that the training and coursework will be pretty full-on for him so for him to have 3 evenings a week to focus on this will be excellent for him. And we get to have his undivided attention for 3 full days every week!

It is only for a year and then he can look for new jobs. I just hope his work approve the application or things will get very tricky.

Thanks Wendz. It will be tough going for a year but I think it will be tough going with him doing new training anyway. At least this way he can focus on it for 3 nights a week!

Ah I'm glad you've reached a solution together CMD - life is rarely ideal, so if you can focus on the quality time you'll have together and the long term gains it sounds really positive :) Fingers crossed that his work approve the compressed hours xx

Haven't had a chance to update on here because I have been so busy with work. I have a free day tomorrow as Max is on a day trip with nursery and it is not my day of work so am looking forward to just chilling out and trying to clean this flat a bit.

It is so hard to keep tidy as Max is like a whirlwind of destruction! He only has to be in a room for 5 mins and it is completely destroyed.

Payday tomorrow. I am looking forward to clearing my Virgin card this month. I have also just filled in my form for the electoral register so will post it tomorrow, leave it for a week or 2 and then apply for the Barclaycard. I hope the deal is still there, and more importantly, that I get accepted for it. I have only been in this address for 7 months but think it is worth a try anyway.

I am also looking forward to paying OH's contact lenses money off some debt as well and hopefully my next phone bill will be loads less and I can also use that money to pay off OH's card mid-month.

I also have a feeling that I am paying too much tax every month, since I started this job in February and realised that I never submitted my P45 so I need to check out with HR if I submit it and if that will work out my tax.

I need to start doing to do lists to motivate myself :)
