Supermarket Snobbery

I'm afraid you've also fallen for the trap of believing that premium brands/stores are only such because they Market themselves that way. They do offer a better quality of food.
Waitrose serves a very convinient place for people like me who work until 7:30pm or later. Delicious well prepared and healthy ready meals that aren't just some nasty microwave platic dish.0 -
The thing about somewhere like Aldi is on something like, say, pasta sauce - there is 1 brand and a couple of varieties. In sainsburys there are 10 brands, 80 varieties and there is *ALWAYS* a brand on offer - Lloyd Grossman for £1 say. You just never get these sort of offers at the cheap places. So at lidl it might be 80p for a jar - at sainsbirys £1 for a premium quality jar (and i'm sorry but it DOES taste better).
FWIW Aldi do seem to have introduced a few more pasta sauces lately, and they're pretty good. I'd not hesitate to recommend their Arrabbiata sauce (75p) which is as good as I've ever found elsewhere.Stompa0 -
I shop at most of the main supermarkets, they all have a certain something that is better priced or more tasty. I love Aldi and Lidls because they have good priced foreign food and it gives me meal ideas, can't bear the thought of getting into a food rut!
I use my tesco jute bags wherever l shop because they were the prettiest ones when l bought them :rotfl:
I won't shop in Nettos though went in one a few times and couldn't get a decent shop, l always came out with things missing because they'd sold out or didn't like quality but don't 'look down' on aynone who shops there it's a personal thing. Nettos isn't too near to me though so that's why it's never a preferred choice.
And yes if l had the money l would shop in M&S and Waitrose too, l do love the quality and selection, they are better/tastier on some things, but as with everything you have to shop around and try
Can l also add that people who do have money aren't always bad payers because they choose to be, it's because they're busy working long hours or very hard for their money. I'm not saying no-one else does but it's hard juggling everything in life and even worse if you perhaps run a business or work for yourself.

They're very good for that kind of thing i admit, but I tend to get that kind of stuff from the pound shop down the road - even cheaper!
Yes I suppose it depends on what you are buying. For instance I love Lacura deoderant and that is 89p per tin, so for me cheaper than the pound shop.
I have to make a special visit to get to the pound shop so a lot of it depends if a store is conveniently placed. I love browsing the pound shops too.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

i live near tesco, morrisons and a lidl, i think you have to shop around for your shopping, the supermarkets are all out to make a profit, but i am on a limited budget and if i shop about i can get some bargains. I always use a basket, not a trolley as this restricts how much you can spend.
I usually go to tescos after work - about 6.30- 7pm and can get bread, some fruit and veg that are in the sale, i only buy what i need for coming meals and resist the temptation to buy things i wouldn't usually.
At the weekend, i make a list and get different bits from Morrisons, Lidl and Tesco. I'm not bothered where i buy my groceries, but am looking for the best quality at the best price.
I've no time for people who look down their noses at different stores, they must have too much money than sense. I never used to shop this way, used to use a trolley and shop in one store, i probrably save about £30 a week by doing this.
Works for me.Newbie. Really nervous but going to give it my best shot.:hello:0 -
I rotate around the supermarkets a bit, makes it a bit more varied and interesting!
Out of the main ones I prefer Asda, as it offers the best value for the things I buy.
I have shopped at Aldi and Lidl at the past, but I feel the prices have risen rapidly in the last 2 years, making them not as attractive as before. I also dislike how under staffed they are at the tills, which means I physically can't shop there on my lunch break, as sometimes you are waiting ages in the queue. I understand they have to keep costs low, but I think this puts shoppers off.
I use Netto, Wilkinsons or Home Bargains for cleaning products, wash powder etc as you can pick up great bargains there.
Ultimately yes people are silly for being 'snobs' about shops. But as above I don't find Aldi/Lidl as good as they are made out to be, and the stores are smaller so don't offer as much choice. So I end up buying things I don't really want.0 -

Works for me.
your tip of using a basket is a good one, and its one I've used before. As you can physically feel the weight of the basket, and thinking 'will i be able to carry this' as you put every item in makes you think about what you are buying.
with the huge trolleys its easy just to shovel everything in, and buy stuff you don't need.0 -
I love shopping in Lidl - Nothing to do with the prices, it's just more fun seeing all these brands and products I've never heard of before! I've found some amazing bargains too of course (name-brand 2l soft-drinks much cheaper than Tesco and Morrisons even when on offer, and a jar of pimento olives for about 50p!), but part of the fun is in buying things that look nice but which I don't recognize. I've accidentally discovered some amazing food!0
