Supermarket Snobbery

Why do people make such a big deal about the discount supermarkets? Comments such as 'I'd never be seen dead in Netto' and 'the only reason I go into Aldi is for the fruit' fly thick and fast usually from people who constantly complain they are broke! Even on this website there is a thread about what's hot and what's not at Aldi/Netto/Lidl as though they are expected to be sub-standard.
I shop at Aldi for everything except baby formula (they don't sell it) and I tell people that yet I always get a negative response; although in a blind taste test I bet Aldi would knock the socks off the big 4's standard brands. Isn't it time people changed their attitudes and started to be proud of getting value for money? Is anyone with me????

I don't live within shopping distance of a lidl, aldi or netto, so can't shop in them. But I have been called a supermarket snob because I don't shop in them.
I think you'll find that most people can't shop in those stores, because there aren't enough of them.
And reading some of the other threads, they aren't as cheap as they once were. from what I read, if you are shopping in those stores, just because you always did, then you could be paying more than you need to.0 -
I mostly shop at Morrison's and Tesco. Occasionally I have a look in Aldi ot Lidl....... they have some good stuff. I couldnt care less what anyone thinks.
So yes OP,;) I am with you.

Geordie Joe obviously if you don't have the shops available, that's different but most towns do. Really my point is would you look down on someone based on supermarket choice and would you pay more for something just because it was in a 'better' supermarket (i.e a bottle of Pepsi or some Ariel)?0

Shhh dont let on how good lidl is, they will put up their prices if people with a few quid spare start going.
Yes you could go cheaper by going for the other supermarkets own / value brands but then you dont get the quality that lidl gives.
Ive started doing most of my shopping at lidl, I did used to use tesco but the cheaper stuff doesnt even compare to that at lidl.
Some people are probably put off by lack of choice but I like it, really who needs a choice of 20 different brands of baked beans0 -
i agree, thgink all the hype about lidl, although its deserved will push the prices up as seen in aldi0

I really like Aldi, their breakfast cereals appear healthier than most other brands with less sugar and additives. I think some of their soups are far superior to some of the ones Heinz have on offer and some of their ready meal items and pizzas are lovely. Ooh and they do some of the nicest diet fiery ginger beer I've ever tasted. Not to mention enjoying a rummage amongst that weeks offers to see what they have. So I don't think I'm a supermarket snob but I think a lot of the people who live nearby might be as Aldi is always near empty of customers whilst nearby Morrisons is always mobbed.Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190
Comp Wins 2014: None yet0 -
I shop mainly at Tesco simply because I can even walk down there if I only want a couple of bits (I was even closer at my last house) and I'm chronically addicted to collecting the Clubcard points.
Aside from that, I'll shop where's convenient at the time (although avoid M&S because I think they're simply overpriced). I really don't care what it says on my carrier bag though.0
