Supermarket Snobbery

I thought this thread was originally about shopping at the supermarkets that are not considered the big 4/5 for price, not a review of the supermarket staff. I shop at three supermarkets each month, Tesco's, Lidl and Iceland. I find Icelands frozen food and ham are good value, Tesco's is excellent for the monthly shopping bits and Lidl for the expensive necessities like toilet roll, kitchen cleaners, alcohol and tinned foods. Together I find I save a lot of money throughout the month, especially before pay days!0

I do my weekly shopping in Aldi and Asda and over the past 4 years I have saved a fortune! My eldest daughter's mates sometimes have a joke at her 'cheaper' crisps etc but she just shrugs it off and tells them that her mum uses the money she saves for other treats, such as the 4 week holiday we've just had in Florida!0

I don't think the pay is that much higher then other supermarkets so its not about drawing in better staff, its about developing better attitudes when they are working.
But how does that make them more intelligent?0 -
I wouldn't shop at Lidl Netto Aldi or Tesco. Tesco food is just vile and the shops are filthy same goes for Morrisons! It's Britney !!!!!!:T0

So where do you shop, Asda?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I have a Netto across the road... and since I sop at Tesco and Sainsbury's and do a split shop and own brands... I found Netto did not actually save me any money at all!!!! Cost more on most products!
Lidl and ASDA are too far away for me to shop at... which is why I use T & S!!We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -

In the city i live in (Exeter, Devon) There are the following supermarkets:
Tesco x 4 (1 big superstore, and i think 3 smaller stores in the town centre)
Sainsburys x 4 (2 big superstores, 2 sainsburys locals)
Lidls x2
Aldi x2
M&S 1 in the city centre.
I think that's quite alot for (what i think) is a relatively small(ish) city.
I shop at the big tesco, because it's near to my work and i can just nip in and do my weekly shop before coming home. It's easy and convinient.
I have shopped at Lidl before mainly for fruit and veg which i had no faults with, and other little bits.
Sainsburys i find expensive.
I haven't tried the Aldi yet, but i've heard good things.
I don't look down on people who shop at Lidl/Aldi, surely it's up to them where they shop.0 -
Waitrose staff are partners, so they gain from the profits Waitrose make. Some of the checkout staff need to get a better attitude though. Some are sadists even if the management are OK.
I have worked in supermarkets and if you have a d/head manager, usually male, the morale is low and the staff take it out on the customers. Also, they employ d/heads who are similar to them, so like employs like. Get rid of the d/head manager and replace with a good one then the staff will get better.
I find most supermarket staff fantastic.
Waitrose in Horley, Tesco in Three Bridges & Asda in Crawley all have especially nice people working there.0 -
Sometimes though its not just about supermarket snobbery its just that people dont know about the products they sell. After all unless you are prepared to give it a go in the first place - a bit like own and value brands - then you dont know what its like!
Personally, I shop at Tesco as little as possible because I find their stock management awful and their shops are frequently being stocked up during the day so the aisles are full of picking crates. I like Waitrose for the specialist food stuffs and their offers, but I tend to buy cooked meat from Lidl as the meat content is so high and it tastes great. For everyday stuff Asda is good especially with the price guarantee at the moment, but I have been to M&S today for some of their offers.
I agree with you its about getting value for money but its not value for money if you have to drive 20 or 30 miles to get to one of these discount stores (as we would have to) unless you are going there already.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0
