I agree with PrincessJelly, though i don't use Ocado, i use WaitroseDirect as Ocado don't deliver to my area.

I spend much less shopping online than i do instore! I don't find Waitrose particularly expensive. I had a delivery yesterday which came to £54.95, for me, hubby, child and cat i don't think that is too bad for a weeks shop. All fresh products, no ready meals.

I have used Lidl in the past and have found some of their produce very good, however i didn't rate their fruit and veg very highly. I think that may be more down to the fact that the area the shop is situated in not many people eat fruit/veg and it gets a bit old and tired. Everything i bought went off very quickly or didn't really taste of much.

I'm not a snob, i shop where i can get the best value for money.Currently, that is with Waitrose;) A nice man brings my shopping to the door and there is no delivery charge at WaitroseDirect:D

  • :j:j Aldi and Lidl provide good quality food (and other things) at sensible prices. Increasingly, their food products are getting awards from Good Housekeeping. They may not be the brands that people are used to, but butter is butter, milk is milk and bananas are bananas. Generally, I find the quality at Aldi and Lidl to be at least as good as other supermarkets, and often better. Moreover, I reckon I save 30% on an average weekly shop by going to these supermarkets. For example, I've just spent 60 quid at Lidl. The same shop would have cost 80 at Asda, 86 at Tesco, 93 at Sainsbury's and a whopping 111 at Ocado, according to mysupermarket.co.uk. Try them! The tills are also much quicker.

If you think the thought of slaughtering animals and feasting on their flesh is ok. :D

  • I shop at Aldi and occasionally Lidl for the precise reason that they are not Tesco/Asda who I despise with a vengeance.

Queues are normally shorter than in Asda or Tesco and there's a certain excentricity about them that makes their stuff more endearing then the homegenised garbage thrust on consumers by the big 4.

  • In the past Lidls were very poor re queuing but now they call for extra staff as soon as a queue appears. Apart from their feta I have no problems with anything they sell.
Most of my bargains come from Waitrose about 60/90 mins before they close when you get meat & fish about 75% off.
  • I heart Aldi. I just about cried tears of joy when they opened one up just down the road! But tbh although it's cheaper for a lot of things, not for everything esp things you can buy basic brands of in the main supermarkets. And I find their fruit and veg often rotten. But for a lot of things I find it very good value for money.

I shop at Waitrose via Ocado every week. I pay £9.99 for delivery a month (as many deliveries as I want) which I think is worth it, as an internet shop takes me about ten minutes, and it takes me the same amount of time to drive to Waitrose. I don't shop online anywhere else as Ocado rarely subsitute, unlike Sainsburys and Tescos and if they do subsitute the picker always sends a considered choice rather than something that happened to be on the same shelf as the original item :)

I don't have the time to drive out to the supermarket just because key items such as toddler milk, onions, etc either don't arrive or are of poor quality. I put a value on my time, so it makes sense for me to shop with Ocado.

When I do venture into a supermarket, I go to Waitrose for a number of reasons,

    1. I invariably have my children with me and am guaranteed a parent and child space, unlike at Tesco where there are lots of parent and child spaces but they are filled with people with child seats in their car but no child or people who can't park in normal spaces as they are either lazy or are poor drivers.

    2. Last time I was in Tescos my six year old Modeo was keyed, from front to back. That is our nice car, it makes me cross everytime I look at it.

    3. Waitrose aisles are wider

    4. No screaming children in Waitrose (only mine)

    5. Knowledgeable and helpful staff

    6. They will have the food I want

    7. Their meat is ethical.

Need I go on? I am not a supermarket snob, I just go to the one that ticks the right boxes for me and if you examine the reasons why you go to the supermarket you go to, it is probably for the same reason.

Chuckley, if you want to strengthen your arguement, it would be advisable to start using English rather than 'text talk'.

    I love this post!

Is there something about Waitrose that means they have more intelligent staff and there are no yobs to key your car or something!!

Yes there is: they respect their staff, treat them better then other supermarkets and so get back respect in return.
I don't think the pay is that much higher then other supermarkets so its not about drawing in better staff, its about developing better attitudes when they are working.

I will shop where food is good value and where the staff are friendly.

If an M&S has rude staff and overpriced low quality food and Lidl has friendly helpful people and good food for the money, I will shop at Lidl.

There are 3 Sainsburys in our area and 2 of them are dire. They look like they are scavenged, are dirty, are expensive and have surly staff. Their freezers look they have defrosted and refrozen again. The good one is clean, well stocked and has friendly staff.

My biggest bugbears are depleted shelves, especially greedy MSErs cleaning out the deals and not leaving some for other people, queuing and why do so many stores employ such surly checkout staff?

Waitrose staff are partners, so they gain from the profits Waitrose make. Some of the checkout staff need to get a better attitude though. Some are sadists even if the management are OK.

I have worked in supermarkets and if you have a d/head manager, usually male, the morale is low and the staff take it out on the customers. Also, they employ d/heads who are similar to them, so like employs like. Get rid of the d/head manager and replace with a good one then the staff will get better.
