Also the person who said Aldi and Lidl shut at 5 is talking rubbish, they are open until at least 8 sometimes 10 which is fine for most people.

Just typed my postcode into the Aldi store locator, the first 4 it came up with are open till 7.00pm and the fifth one is open till 8.00pm. Neither of these times is any use to someone who shops at 11.00pm.

If you can't shop until 11.00pm and the shop closes at 7, 8, 9 or even 10.00pm, as far as you are concerned it might as well not have opened at all.

The point of the persons post was, she can't shop there because it is closed when she goes shopping. Telling her that "the shop doesn't close 6 hours before she goes shopping, it actually closes 1 hour before she goes shopping" is a complete waste of time.

I just cant walk into a Lidl anymore, went in one years ago and it was just so naff. I appreciate they are cheaper (arguaby) but I wouldnt buy fresh produce there or meat or fish.

I am also a sucker for gorgeous food, and my local Waitrose is simply devine darling. No really it is, I defy anyone to walk around that store and not be intoxicated by the range of foods, especially their Fresh Fish, Meat and Delicatessen counters. Expensive yes, but then again I wouldnt buy detergents and toiletries there, just food and wine.

If I had the choice though, I would buy from the independent Butcher, Baker and Greengrocer etc..But the sad fact is they have been pushed out by the big boys. But thats another conversation for another thread. Aldi, Lidl and Netto should all do well out of the economic gloom, lets see if they do...

There is a definite 'feel' when you go into an Aldi or Lidl, an emptiness somehow? and also no music playing - this is quite beneficial to me in one way, it allows me to think about what I want to buy a bit clearer!, on the other hand, it does feel like there's 'something missing' somehow - well I suppose because we're all used to music blaring in our ears!

I would of course shop in Waitrose all the time if money was no object - it really is lovely food when you go around - I could buy the cake and fish counters for instance - (also some of it is ridiculous and over the top for me, I noticed three different 'strengths' of maple syrup for instance ???!!!!), but sadly my budget doesn't allow me to do this - if only! On the other hand, the bog standard stuff that's way dearer than say Morrisons - Soooo overpriced - Why? It's exactly the same stuff ! I can't believe some of it.

I am not talking rubbish- the ones around me DO close at 5pm. Why is that rubbish?

And 10pm is still not do-able for me. 11pm. Fine for most people yes, but not me as Geordie Joe has also explained. I didn't post to comment about other people, (I cannot comment on other people being that I have no experience of being another person so wont) I posted to comment about me.

I find over the course of a whole weeks shopping the cheap supermarkets tend to be very (an i mean within £3-5) close in price to that of a shop at somewhere like sainsburys.

The thing about somewhere like Aldi is on something like, say, pasta sauce - there is 1 brand and a couple of varieties. In sainsburys there are 10 brands, 80 varieties and there is *ALWAYS* a brand on offer - Lloyd Grossman for £1 say. You just never get these sort of offers at the cheap places. So at lidl it might be 80p for a jar - at sainsbirys £1 for a premium quality jar (and i'm sorry but it DOES taste better).

Also a big supermarket has a large reduced section which if you go at the right time of day you can get a weeks worth of meat and fish for about £5 - Aldi don't have this kind of reduction.

So I find on balance, a savvy shopper at a big 4 supermarket (and even M&S, waitrose etc) can get round the store with a trolley that costs just a couple of quid more than aldi - things like tinned toms can even be cheaper as they offer the 'basics' version that aldi don't.

I really think there is a bit of a myth about these cheap places. They're not as cheap as you think due to the limited range and, i know this is debatable, but I really think the quality is quite poor - many prepared foods are full of salt and sugar and the meat isn't british. We have the best meat in the world - eat it!

I love Aldi and Lidl. They are both some drive away so I only visit once a month on average. I cannot fault the quality of their produce. Just one thing I hated, was Lidl baked beans, though Aldi ones are fine.

I think their household section is great. I get all my bin bags, dw tablets, washing up liquid etc as these are easily as good as named brands.

I too use my Waitrose long life bags though not out of snobbery.

We throw it all in the trolley and pack up in bags by the car, much easier and quicker.

Saturday afternoons around 5pm are a good time to go as they are pretty empty at the branch I go to.

They're very good for that kind of thing i admit, but I tend to get that kind of stuff from the pound shop down the road - even cheaper!

I could not agree with this more, you go with what you can afford and where you feel comfortable.

I dont believe any of the big 4 supermarkets are better or worst than each other, come on now how the heck can they be when they all sell the same stuff and 9 times out of 10 all have the same offers at different times!!

I do however find it interesting that some people think that if they "had money" they would shop at Waitrose or M&S, this is misguided and foolish you have fallen for the worst of the worst and that is brand brainwashing just because it has a waitrose or m&s sticker on it does not automatically make it any better than anything else lol foolish..........................

If I "has the money" I would only ever shop locally, at local butchers organis farms etc etc this is where the best quality of food is and always has been, saldy they have always outpriced themselves so I cannot afford to constantly week after week give them my money, but if I was rich this is where I would shop :)

While in Lydl today a lady in front of me put her goods into a Marks and Spencer bag Lol
I use my sainsburys jute bags if I have to carry the shopping as they are sturdy, with long handles and not stupidly big. :T

lidl is great for Jams with a decent fruit content, some cheeses, pickles and they have some good veg offers.
The aldi here is quite expensive £1.40 for a loaf of brown bread.
