Read the terms and conditions, and all other messages between you.

The insurance conditions are clearly stated. As well as notifying them to discontinue it after the free initial period, you could have cancelled the direct debit at the same time.

Likewise, is the ongoing monthly rental due to you asking for a PAC to move the number, then not doing so? The terms of this are set out as well. No company can guess what day the customer wants to transfer, and this is why it is left to the customer to operate.
  • I bought a contract phone from them about a year ago. There was an option to 'decline' their insurance - which I did.
Sure enough, when the phone arrived, the insurance had been added. I called them and asked them to remove it, which they agreed to do.
When my bank statement arrived I noticed that they had taken a premium by DD.
I contacted my bank and recovered the money and stopped the DD.
Its a great pity that major British companies continue to do business in this very dubious manner...

I keep getting people defending those crooks at CarphoneWarehouse, with idiotic excuses.

Strangely, these are exactly the same excuses that I was given when I called up.

I am starting to think that Carphone warehouse pays people to go on newsgroups to excuse their fraudulent behaviour.

What a scam. Who the hell reads all the fine print. So let me get this straight. I don't want insurance, I didn't ask for it, I tell them I don't want it, but its my fault that they steal money for me, because I didn't call the bank to tell them not to pay for something I didn't ask for.

    Yeah--- that makes sense.

CPW said 'If you don't use the Pac code, it'll cancel after a month. They didn't mention anything about my contract ending being changed. They didn't tell me my cancellation had been stopped, they didn't mention the fact that they'd keep charging me, and they didn't check that I understood the change in contract.

    Theives, liars, cheats and fraudsters.

I wonder what people get to defend this scum.

We aren't defending them - just offering common sense!

And as for 'who the hell reads the small print'....insurance offers aren't exactly in the small print! They are listed in the offer when you purchase the phone online. If you don't want it - cancel the DD it takes about 2 minutes!

I suggest you start reading the 'small print' as it offers up vital information about things like this!
Wondering how to have a life & not rack up more debts...

  • considering the majority of threads you start seem to begin with
    BEWARE "insert company name"

i`d have said it was about time you took time to study the small print, because you seem to have a lot of trouble with this after you have taken accepted your purchases/contracts home,

This thread is much the same as your last rant on CPW
    http://http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=594150

where you state you rarely check bank accounts, letters or text messages,
yet seem to out huge effort into posting on here and posting replies when you don`t see wholesale support for your complaints,

If you had read the text message that gave you your PAC code, you would not have cost yourself £150 and a whole host of other problems

When I foolishly bought a phone through their subsiduary OneStopPhoneShop, they gave me insurance without my approval. I called and wrote them to tell them I didn't want their 'Opt-out' insurance.

    1. Insurance is usually automatically added and this IS usually stated on the order forms. If there wasn't an opt out option in there you can write to the insurance company to cancel it.

    2. You DON'T write to onestopphoneshop to cancel insurance, you have to write to the insurance company themselves. Did you do that? If not, you know who to blame.
  • Slightly different, but when I bought the Moto F3 on pay as you go as a spare from E2Save (part of CPW) I noticed on my paper receipt the cheeky crooks have added VIP Technical support which has a monthly fee (which costs more than the phone!). Compare that to the email I received detailing my order:

    Motorola F3 Blue
Virgin Mobile Pay As You Go
    £10 Airtime Top-Up

    £2.99
    £10
    TOTAL PRICE INCLUDING VAT £12.99
And you will see no mention of this VIP technical support.
I hate to think how many people haven't noticed this has been added and ended up paying.
I am confident when I say the Carphone Warehouse group don't operate in a truthful manner towards their customers to say the least!
  • cpw lost their dictionary a long time ago now! Probably can't spell anyway - although I expect they're getting quite familiar with the meanings of four letter words nowadays.
