It's perfectly fine to freeze milk, but depending on how full the plastic bottle is before you freeze it you might want to take little out so it doesn't make a mess when it expands.

    The yellowy colour is fine.

If I have a 4pint bottle which needs using up and I want to freeze it I split into smaller bottles as I agree it doesn't last for very long once defrosted. I keep a few little bottles for this.

Also I find the sooner you freeze it the better, if I buy milk and freeze it straight away it'll last a fewof days when defrosted, milk thats on it's date or very close will last a day maybe a little more. Suppose by freezing you're just delaying the 'going off' process.
One day I might be more organised...........

I have 6 litres of organic milk which I would like to freeze as they have use by dates of the 22nd Decmber. However my partner says if you freeze milk in it's plastic bottles it will expand and come through the top, so I would need to pour out some from the bottle before freezing.

Does anybody know if this is true?

    Thanks in advance x

Bambywamby - just throw your bottles in the freezer, it is absolutely no problem and we do it all the time. The milk does not expand enough to come through the top. It freezes very well. Would suggest you put the bottles in the freezer sort of upright, because very occasionally the tops can leak a little and then you'l find trickles of frozen milk all over the freezer.

We buy the normal (non-organic) 4 or 6 pint cartons with the handle and put them straight in the freezer. They do expand but they don't burst.

They can leak a bit from the top when defrosting, so we just defrost by the sink, use a little bit in our tea, and then finish defrosting in the fridge.

  • I agree just put them in the freezer. No need to pour any out.

Milk does seem to go (a sort of ) orange when you freeze it! But it's OK again when it thaws.
    .....

  • We freeze milk, but pour some out beforehand, or it does expand and leaks out. We do freeze it on it's side though, maybe that is why we have problems.

  • We always freeze and never have any problems. Dont take any out first either.
