sh1305 you say you have had it on an off for 8 years, when its off did you let DWP know and then claim again when its on..just a thought

Where did sh1305 say that they have been claiming benefits for the past eight years? You appear to be making assumptions!

Please dont tar us all with the same brush, i suffer with depression its just part of my Bipolar, i put on a front when i am around people but when i am on my own i am a mess, they might be putting a front on you dont know, and hearing voices i hear them too you get used to it, and its fine when they are not shouting at you or telling you what to do, so think when you see them they might actually have the "nice" person talking to them.
    Is a Bipolar bear :p

So why can't you get DLA? I thought you would get it if you can't cook properly.

My husband had a stroke about 20 months ago, this left his left hand almost useless, but he was classed as being able to cook a meal, and he was awarded low rate DLA for care.
the system is very wrong in my estimation

If he couldnt cook a meal it would still be low rate care!

Exactly! I haven't been claiming for the last 8 years and never said I have been.

Most disabled people dont choose to be disabled and we all learn ways to adapt, he has been assessed and awarded lower rate care which has nothing to do with his age or working history.

He would need to need help throughout the day to get mid rate.

personally I fail to see how so many peop,e are swinging the lead with DLA.
I've applied 3 times, and 3 times I have been refused.I'm waiting for my tribunal hearing which should be any time soon.

I suffer from chronic pain in my right knee. My knee is also unstable and I have to walk using a crutch. Due to the pain I also suffer from depression and get less than 4 hours sleep a night due to the condition. There is nothing that can be done for me untilI am closer to 50 (another 20 years away) and then I can have a knee replacement, which is not guaranteed to improve the pain.

I work fulltime in an office, but the journey to and from work is murder, and unlike most chronic pain it isn't just there whehn I walk, it's there all day and night every day and night, no matter if I sit down, lie down, in the bath, in bed , whatever.

They say I can cook a meal for one as I can use a micro0wave and cook a ready meal. I cannot carry hot pans/water/food etc as I permenantly use a stick and only have one free hand, so getting something hot from an oven would be nearly impossible. I tried to expalin that although i'm not an imbeceile and yes I can cook a ready mealin a microwave, how am I supposed to get from the microwave to the dinner table safely using one hand to carry piping hot food and walk usign my stick. They said I could eat it stood up at the kitchen counter.

When I last got refused I called upto advise I wanted to appeal and was talking to the girlon the phone who turned around to me and said that the main reason I don't get it is because I go to work.

So because I choose to get up off my !!!! and go to work and not sponge off the state I'm unlikely to ever get DLA. Yet if I was to quit my job, sell the house, claim all available benefits, live in a LA house and claim housing/council tax benefit, I would more than likely get it.

There is no reward in this country for trying to do the right thing.

The cooking test is one that means you would have to be able to use a cooker and cook a meal - not just heat up something in the microwave.

You can work and claim DLA.
