  • its freezing here tody - the sky is grey and its so dark. Someone mentioned at the car boot yesterday that its meant to snow this week!

Think DS2 has a virus, went town this morning and got nothing done, his cold from last week is gone but hes lethargic and clingy. I have only got two pairs of long trousers, bought 1 pair last week and threw out my two pairs of jeans that are years old and threadbare!

I need petite clothes as Im a 26" leg and cant sew! Locally they charge so much for shortening trousers that the cost of a primark pair and the stitching costs more that the £18 pair. Have drawn the cash out to buy more but this puts us in the overdraft till OH get paid on Thurday. Why do they make petite stuff so expensive? Shoudl have bought them in sales but i never buy clothes as theres other stuff to buy but if it rains on school run later Im !!!!!!ed!

I'm a really shorty too but I just put my trousers on then turn the legs under (does that make sense?) and they stay like that all day - no problem!

:)Anyone have a good shin of beef recipe? Slow cooker/casserole/hob? Will be going to butcher later in week for this and would love an already tried recipe to use.

I chop meat into one inch chunks, fry lightly until surface of meat is seared brown. Transfer to a caserole with chopped carrots, onions, celery (and any other vegs you have such as swede, turnip or chopped tomatoes). Put a couple of Oxo cubes and a heaped teaspoon of cornflour to thicken into a little COLD water in a measuring jug. Stir until dissoved. Add boiling water (sufficient to cover the meat & vegs) mix and stir into dish. Cook in a low oven for one & a half hours or until meat is tender. Check halfway through to ensure liquid hasn't evaporated. If it's getting low make up another Oxo cube with some water and stir in. (I suspect slow cookers probably need less water than oven or hob cooking because evaporation is less).
  • Also want some help fro you guys, i have a little terrier who is getting quite old, he does sleep with our other dog and has lots of fleecy blankets to sleep on but i worry about him getting cold he only has a short coat, i was thinking of getting him a little coat/jacket but to be honest they are silly money was wondering if anyone had any ideas about making one, i was thinking out of fleece fabric, it would need to be really simple as not the best at sewing, any ideas would be gratefully recieved.

    what terrier is he???

we have a JRT and we have found that my sons old baby clothes fit him quite snuggly so have been using them and just cutting arms off so his legs are free. also if you look on the markets or ebay you can pick up dog jumpers fairly cheaply.

ebay has loads too in various colours!
    Time to find me again

gailey - is your fire gas? If so, it can cost more to have just that on that putting the heating on :( Depends on your fire/ ventilation.

It's chilly here today and has that fine mist in the air which can get you really wet. I've decided that I'll have the heating on for a couple of hours tonight - I can also get some of the washing dry then, too. I hate getting behind on washing - 6 of us means that it builds up really easily! Also DD has come down with a cold and is suffering, so her being cold won;t help (and I have to confess that the cold was making me cough and wheeze first thing - I had to wear a wheat bag around my shoulders to help ease it)

What about buying some wundaweb (I think it is called that). Once you have cut your trousers to length, you just iron it on, no sewing needed.

It is about £2.75 a packet, which should do several pairs of trousers.

    Hope that helps.
  • Cold here too and can't light stoves as we have still not had a chance to sweep the chimneys. DS and DD birthday today. Splurged on squirty cream and choc flakes so they can have fancy hot choc and popcorn tonight and watch a DVD. Also bought two new hotties. Still to make birthday cake.

Can't remember who was asking about corned beef being salty. I always buy shops own/value everything if possible but IMO there is a huge difference in Co-op's value/everyday corned beef and their ordinary one - the value one is much too salty for me so have changed up to the ordinary one which is fine. (Have not actually checked the salt content of either on the label - just going by taste!)

Really hope you feel better soon gailey and don't try to do everything. I find Christmas much less stressful these last few years as we made several decisions - we only give presents to children now as we have such a large extended family it was getting out of hand, even tho we are not big spenders. Only send cards to people we are not going to see. No trad cake as no one except me likes it that much. My mum used to make us one when the children were small and sometimes it was still going in August! I make a lemon drizzle cake instead, no mince pies or C'mas pud either but maybe pavlova or choc brownies with home made ice cream. We also have our main meal on C'mas eve (something special but not necessarily turkey) which then makes C'mas day lovely and relaxed for me too - soup and cold meat/leftovers - plus all the treats and bits and pieces we don't normally have eg fizzy drinks and crisps and chocs - not saying you'll want to do the exact same things as us but worth sitting down and thinking what makes C'mas special for you rather than all the traditional things you think you have to do. And then I enjoy doing the things I choose to do instead of feeling stressed that I have to do them. And as kidcat says, so what if this C'mas slips a bit, it will come round again soon enough.

Just racing thru, but noticed about petite trousers - I either use wunderweb or buy kids stuff, but was in Asda other day and noticed their smart price jeans at £4 in short leg, which may be ideal for school runs. :)
