Another thing I do to try and prevent any damp building up in our house, on days when it's dry or windy is to open the front and back windows of the house for a while and get a good draught of air going through. It's surprising how this kind of regular ventilation, even for a short time, can deduce any dampness building up and even if windows arn't wide open, just a small crack of fresh air in each room can have the same effect. Obviously you don't want to lose the heat which you've built up, but you often find that around midday, any natural heat from your early morning two hour switch-on has dissipated anyway. There's such a temptation to "keep the fug" in during winter but actually I think some regular fresh air does help to keep the indoor atmosphere much healthier and helps prevent that stuffy, sleepy feeling that can often catch up with you.
  • I'm a firm believer in having a window slightly open and making sure the house is aired properly in the mornings. It does make a difference.
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x

No heating yet, im refusing till Halloween

Im getting the 'im cold' whinging but am replying 'have I hidden your jumpers/dressing gown? No, go find them instead', It doesn't help that they leave the patio door open every 5 seconds.

I have layered up their beds now, mattress, thin duvet, fleece blanket, fitted sheet over top to hold it all down then they have their regular duvet on top. When it gets colder they have fleece snuggle sac's too or all in one sleepsuits.

I find that HABS often has all the different varieties of Woolite liquid on sale at way less than it costs in Mr T's so might be worth a look there if you have one local to you.

I absolutely agree with airing the house/rooms regularly even when it's very cold outside, learnt this from Mumsie. My grandmother does exactly what you say about keeping the fug in, all her doors and windows will be permanently shut tight to keep the heat in. I appreciate she is elderly, but it makes me want to avoid going to her house as it's so stuffy in there that before long I feel ill.

I like fresh air and OH (who admittedly works outside all day in all weathers) likes it fuggy. The hinges on the bedroom window are nearly done from us repeatedly opening it after the other has shut it or vice versa!

Ceridwen, those bottom cross pieces should be pretty easy to knock off - I had a desk delivered with something similar and only very lightly tacked on. Is there someone in your local LETs scheme who would swop the handles round for you? Annoying though if you're expecting it ready-to-go. I once had this with toy shelves we bought for DS and DD's b'day, a triplane and a fairy castle - nothing in the catalogue to say they were flat pack - I did ring and did get an apology but nothing else - couldn't send them back as they were b'day presents and no time to get anything else.
