  • I'm also considering to go on the coil, after being on the pill for years, as apparently, the combined pill isn't a good thing to be on if you suffer from migraines with visual disturbances. The family planning nurse gave me lots of advice and leaflets, and I think the coil sounds good, but seeing my GP on friday to make sure that it will be suitable with all my other medication/conditions. Will let you know what it's like if I do decide to go for it :)

(I can't believe I'm talking about my family planning matters on the internet!!)

I love Traego Mill. Have only been when we have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall but it's great. The one near Exeter was a great day out when the kids were younger because of all the extra fun things there. Great bargains for us all and a few activities for them too.

Our primary school has dedicated 'water breaks' to ensure the children drink. They use chilled tap water, though - and plastic beakers form IKEA which have been going for years :D

The secondary school that I used to work in had one of those water coolers without a bottle on - from the mains - was nice, as it filtered it.

We have a water & ice dispenser in our fridge freezer. Tap water here is rather yuck, but filtered and chilled it's nice. The children drink more from the dispenser than theever did from the tap - and yhou used to have to run the tap for quite a while to get it cold and clear, so rather wasteful.

  • pink_numbers, come over to the Daily and talk all you like about the coil, its one of the most common topics of conversation, apart from bottoms, washing, and cows mooing :D The "coil of choice" for the OS lady about town seems to be the Mirena coil, I could probably insert it for you, such indepth conversations have my contemporaries over on that thread had! :rotfl: Honestly though, there are quite a few of the girls over there using it and singing its praises if you have any questions, nothing shocks us over there! :D

  • i only drink tapwater and have done so since i was about 8 and i've not keeled over yet!!!! however, i have read several articles commenting on the safety of drinks in plastic bottles. apparently when stored near other products also contained in plastic, a certain amount of the other product osmoses (or moves) across into the water/drink thus producing a mild solution of the other product. for instance, if your bottle of water was stored in a warehouse or such like, next to the bleach, we would all be drinking a mild bleach solution. (obviously we already do this with the addition of chlorine in our water but could be much nastier substances!!!!). therefore aren't we better off drinking tap water which undergoes specific testing?!?!?!?!
    ok off soapbox now!!!!! lol!!!!

  • phew! there was me thinking I'll be outcasted forever from OS board!! (and I would just DIE if that happened!) Thank you jackieglasgow, I know who to come to if my GP won't do it ;)
  • Its just tap water noe for our kids, I don't know why it wasn't to begin with, as we have fantastic clear, soft water here, and they now only drink tap water from their brought from home bottles. I always found it a bit crazy. But I suppose there are lots of kids out there who didn't/don't drink plain water before this was adopted as policy who might do so now, through choice. I'm just sad it took a budget cut for them to realise it was a waste in the first place. Six years that policy was in place in my region!

That's pretty much what I do too! :)

At the moment I can go 4 weeks without repeating a meal, although my current menu plan is for 5 weeks. I have enough recipes to do more, but they're old recipes that I don't fancy since discovering all my new ones IYKWIM

I would love to only cook Chicken, Beef or Pork once a week, but it's difficult as I don't really have enough Vegetarian recipes and we don't really like fish/lamb or soup.

I never repeat the same meat/vegetables/pasta/rice or similar flavoured type of meal two days in a row.

We eat bacon, minced pork, chops, sausages, chicken breast - diced for various recipes - chicken thighs, beef mince and vegetarian meals.

Wouldn't know how to cook a whole chicken if it jumped up and pecked me in the backside. Ex-hubby wouldn't eat whole chicken, and new OH and the children (adults) don't like the dark meat on a chicken, so I'm not really sure we would benefit even if I knew how.

Also, the only beef we eat is mince. I cannot find a decent Cottage Pie or Spag Bol recipe (I've been looking for years, tried loads, but they're always disgusting _pale_ - and I always buy lean mince so I really don't know why ) so that limits us to Chilli :(

I adore beef! But I can't afford joints (of any type of meat actually) or steak and whereas I love stews and casseroles I haven't had one for years, as without a slow cooker, it kind of negates a cheap cut of meat if I have to have the oven or ring on for 1½-2hrs or more to cook it :(

What do others do who don't have a slow cooker?

Hello everyone, hope you don't mind my jumping into your super thread. It's great.
Just running off to me pit in a mo so just a quick couple of recipes from the cook challenged me.

    Spag bol:
    500g PORK mince
    1 can chopped toms
    1/2 cup frozen diced onions
    2 oxo cubes
    1 tsp pepper
    2 teaspoons powdered garlic(asian shop)
    2 tsp dried oregano
Bung it all in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 45 mins.
Throw it on top of pasta and add grated cheese and parmesan.

    Cottage pie:
    500g mince
    1/2 cup frozen diced onions
    2 oxo cubes
    1/2 pint water
Bung in a pan and simmer 45 mins.
When cooked add a tin of any supermarket mixed veg to the mince mix and top with mashed potatoe, bung in the oven Gas 5 for 1hour .
Both freeze well, I freeze the cottage pie before the oven stage.
    Kind thoughts,
    bb

I have to confess that buying bottled water is a non-MSE luxury of mine! I buy the cheapest sparkling spring water (i.e. water that isn't just fizzy tap water) but I can't and won't drink tap water unless I'm desperate. It tastes awful and I hate to think of all the chemicals in it & have heard too many news stories over the years of tap water supplies being contaminated to trust it.

The only tap water I enjoyed drinking was when I did a course in Cumbria and they got their water from a local natural resevoir. It came out of the tap with an orange tint because of the peat but it tasted lovely!

It's not just in my head either, I can taste the difference between a couple of the still water spring waters & when I drank Coca-Cola I could tell if it was glass or plastic bottled, from an aluminium can, from a steel can (before they started only using aluminium), from a small can, or draft - I have sensitive taste buds!

All in all it's only a small part of our weekly shopping budget & we recycle the bottles. Everyone has their area where they won't cut corners & bottled water is mine! :p

I can understand that. I'm so used to the hard water here I find don't like the taste if we go somewhere where the water is softer.

Also I can 'taste' anything that comes out of cans rather than other packaging. DH thinks I'm imagining it :o
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x
