I have posted a query on the SlowCooker thread about roasting a chook, would any of you be able to pop over there and offer me some advice please? It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Just a quickie to say I was reminded today of this quote, that I love:
"Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared."
Don't know who it's by, but thought it was very OS in its intention!

Recall going on a recent demonstration against the (was) proposed 3rd runway for Heathrow and being absolutely horrified at just how many planes were swooping over the tops of peoples homes and how low they were - it felt like one could stand on the roof and reach up and touch them:eek::eek::eek:. I simply could not believe that there were plans afoot to demolish Sipson Village to allow for even more planes swooping everywhere (it was quite a nice little village - with a good community feel - nice village green, etc - nothing wrong with it IF all the planes had stopped flying overhead disturbing it). Anyways - we WON:D:T:D:T - and stopped that 3rd runway...<doing cartwheel smilies>:D - but I was very aware that I couldnt have tolerated all those darn planes flying over my head anyway and would have been tempted to stand there taking potshots at them if I had lived there as it was ...it was horrendous living there anyway ...
It must be an absolute nightmare to live right underneath plane flight paths - and people in that position must often be thinking "Peak Oil cannot come soon enough...what can I do to bankrupt airlines asap?" - well I certainly would be for sure....
(...and yes...that was the last straw and has stopped me ever flying again - as I simply couldnt put people through living with airplanes flying overhead like that just so I could have a foreign holiday....I'd hate myself for being so selfish....).0 -

It isn't just airlines though is it? Our motorways are a nightmare - either because of the sheer volume of traffic, or necessary maintenance, or accidents - usually due to the sheer volume of traffic. My sister came up to see me yesterday, she was held up on the M1 for over an hour due to an accident. She went back today - still not home, accident on the M42 plus roadworks. This country is going to grind to a halt sometime soon.
Too many vehicles, too many people. Something has to give and I suspect that if we continue to be selfish in the number of cars we think we need and the amount of goods we deem necessary for our well being a total paralysis won't be long coming.0 -
Am a bit sad today - I had to have Deirdre Hen put to sleep. So now Mavis Hen is on her own.
Am really sorry to hear that smileyt :grouphug: Chickens are such lovely old things. My Dad used to keep them when I was a girl, I hope you find a suitable companion for her soonI had my interview this morning. I did my best and answered all of their questions but I'm not feeling very positive. It may just be the post-interview slump but I'm not feeling very confident, I don't know that I went into enough detail or gave good examples (it was a competency based interview) and they just kept smiling and nodding as they always do at interview and didn't push me or ask for more detail. I should know by Friday either way but I'm so fed up with my current job. I know I'm really lucky to have a job at all at the moment and I shouldn't complain but I'm really unhappy there. Oh well, will have to wait and see.

Must admit I am struggling to see why anyone would "love living under the flightpath"......very very puzzled and can't think how/why...Could you explain please? - as I honestly can't think why anyone would feel anything other than very very upset about having to do so?
Jobs - ummm....well...one needs jobs..one needs peace and quiet in ones own home and I guess people have differing priorities on which they put first. Personally - peace and quiet in my own home comes way way over any other consideration...though I do understand why someone else might put jobs first (despite disagreeing vehemently with them on that and feeling that the first priority must always be ones homelife - but I am aware that others think differently to me on that...). My own take on anything is that my life comes first and needing a job for myself comes some way down the list - but I do know that not everyone thinks this way and sympathise with anyone feeling they have to put money first and hope that their Life will be okay in other respects..
But I honestly am extremely puzzled as to how anyone could feel anything other than upset/anger/etc at having a flightpath overhead - so an explanation as to how anyone might feel otherwise would be instructive..(yes...really...as I go off and puzzle whether I might manage to put up with it if I was stone deaf...and not sure I could even then.....).0 -

Its a simply answer I am afraid. I just love to watch the planes. I am about 3 miles from the airport so the noise isnt a problem for me, having said that we did look at a house nearer to the airport.
You are lucky to think of life first and a job is way down on the list but that doesnt pay the bills/rent.Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -

Actually - this is one of the minus points of getting older in my book. I spent many years thinking "Things are gonna get better" and doing my own personal bit to try and campaign for things "getting better". So - no...I don't feel I wasted my time/energy etc trying to improve Society - I did what I could and I'm pleased with some of what I helped towards/achieved personally/etc. But I do get very very down when I wonder if people will ever abandon their own "personal interests" in favour of the "greater good" and often don't feel very hopeful at all as to whether that will ever happen. Any day of the week I can see numerous examples - walking round the streets/studying posts on MSE/looking at the papers that many many people are still putting their own "personal interests" way higher priority than the "greater good" and I do really struggle sometimes on the days when I feel most hopeless about the chances of things ever changing in that respect - but I must still have some hope that things will change for the better - because I pick myself back up off the floor and try again and again and try to "think positive" that the prevailing "societal mindset" will change..
Guess I just have to keep working personally on not losing my temper too frequently when I spot yet more thoroughly depressing examples of the current "societal mindset"...
Things are gonna get better...they ARE...they ARE....<walks off repeating this to myself firmly> One idealist not quite "dead and buried" yet here chez ceridwen.......:cool:0
