Do you have a branch of this near you?

    http://www.fareshare.org.uk/

Thanks, but no there is nothing near here. If I'd known I'd at least have bought her a sandwich or something.

I might chuck some garden stuff in the car tomorrow and wait for her in the car park in the morning. I won't be able to live with myself if I don't. I don't actually know her, which is probably why she could burst it all out to me. Maybe it's easier if you don't know somebody very well. I feel awful, because I've had a couple of quick chats to someone sitting next to her about preserving garden stuff, freezing etc. And she has no food.

Yep - good idea. It doesnt impinge on someone's pride if you're "just passing over" surplus garden produce. Do you have any spare potatoes? - best of all ..as that would give her some carbohydrate to fill up with as well (of course - you could always be a little devious and buy a large bag of potatoes and roll them in a bit of mud from your garden - so it LOOKS as if they have come from your garden;):) - she's not to know whether you actually grow potatoes as well or no...).

The Americans have an idea going about deliberately growing a bit extra food (over and above what they need themselves) - something about "grow an extra row"??? This is done specifically so they have some to give away to anyone who needs it. Hence my thoughts that we should all grow everything we can and it doesnt matter if we have spare - there may be someone who needs it.

At the least - if we can manage to grow surplus of something - we can swop it with other people for something that they grow and we don't/cant.

You don't want to read the book I'm reading at the moment then Mardatha - about people in "Richistan" - ie living in the parallel universe thats being rich. Oh the problems of having 500 cars that need special handwashing and the new growth career - according to this (2007) book the American rich now can't find enough super butlers ("household managers") to run their lives for them - and well-paid those jobs are too. One could easily earn $100,000 a year (2007 rates) to help them organise their lives.....(Don't all rush at once - the courses they have to go on to learn how to be a "household manager" are quite a big investment of money themselves and if you fell out of favour you'd be poor in a country with even less of a Welfare State than this one).

Parallel universe about sums it up - certainly living on a different planet to me. I often wonder how people who have that much money + keep it all themselves live with their consciences. Do they just tell themselves "I'm really trying - so I deserve it. They could all work as hard as me - and if they did they would be as rich as me"? I'd have a field day giving away money to good causes if I had loadsa money - errr....and a headache working out which exactly were good causes and how could I make sure they didnt waste any of the money they were about to be given.....(think the businessperson streak I have would be well-exercised.....).

Oh no not more books - Im still reading things from the last thread.

Feeling very low this morning and to top it off meant to pay dentist bills yesterday with a friends credit card in return for a nice cooked dinner. Well he had the dinner and i completely forgot to use his card.

Well put ben to bed last night and he was wincing in pain as I brushed one side - had a look and the back of the gum has flattened off and the gum looks like its holding a tooth but then there is a big red buldge under that. He had an abscess a few months ago from a tooth he cracked in school which they helpfully didn't tell me about and 5 days later got him home hysterical in pain, and then his face swelled up so had to rush him to the out of hours doctor at the hospital.

this one now is on the opposite side. He has had no pain at all. Been eating fine on it, no swelling, he's been to the dentist twice since and got his 6 months all clear and is due back in September. What the hell??

So now I'm hoping they'll see him today just to check it if nothing else. Might be his adult teeth coming in (fingers crossed) My friend has text me his card details and has said to ring dentist at 9am, then ring the payment place, give them details and his number and they can ring him to double check card details and get authorisation so I'm hoping they'll do this. If they wont he is coming over at 4pm after work for me to use it.

Hopefully all this bad luck means I'm due a windfall of good luck soon! best get playing the lottery if i have some spare change!

have just noticed moth holes in the back of bens PJs! Doh! :( looks like a trip to primark on pay day is in order too.
    Time to find me again

I've just put a bag together with some onions, cooking apples, couple of cucumbers and I'm just going down the garden to see what is ready. Not much, but in those circumstances every little helps.

    Bad and good news...

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/19/chinas-cheap-labor-era-is_n_648234.html

Bad news in a way because the cost of clothes and shoes will go up. I'm already cringing at the thought of having to buy all the children new winter shoes and coats. If food prices are going up.. AND clothes/shoes prices are going to rocket... geeshh...

Gadgets and stuff, well, luxury items we can go without. We can choose not to buy luxury stuff 'made in China.' But food and clothes are not luxuries...

Good news on the other hand for the people in China. It's staggering to hear what people earn over there. They deserve to be treated better and get paid better for their hard work. Soo.. double edged sword really isn't it?

OH has worked out in China quite a bit, although I agree they are paid very low wages and they need to be paid more , their food/clothes etc are very cheap.
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!
