I've been like this all week, very nearly just walked into shops and blown a big wad of cash. All of my summer clothes suddenly seemt to look ridiculous

But then I stop and think, 'dont be silly, you can't buy new clothes...YOU'RE TOO FAT!!! :rotfl:

Me too! The other day I wrote I feel so canine which I think sums it up.

Ive just very quickly done legs & bikini line do feel way better. Must have a squirt of perfume somewhere

Im not buying new clothes, despite only having one pair of jeans and thats er, it. I cant afford them and thats that. I know it was bad when I got my credit card out before, and then switly put it back in its "safe place".

I just wish one of these competitions of win £100 dorothy perkins vouchers or something would pay out JUST FOR ONCE.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

omg i have been feeling the same all week.

i feel so frumpy , i'm either pulling my trousers up cause there too big , or their too small and only just fit. all my tops seem to be so short that i'm always pulling them down.

but it's my birthday and everyone has said they will buy me an item of clothing. ok thats sounds loads but i only ever get 5 birthday cards 1 from hubby , 1 from kids , 1 from inlaws , and 2 from grandparents. makes me feel like billy no mates but at least i know there from peeps who really love me which makes it better.so i'm planning to get 2 pairs of trousers and 3 tops. i figure with this i can then use jewelery and diff hair accsories to make the outfit look different.

for my birthday last year my hubby booked me a hair dressers appointment and said i could have whatever i wanted and i felt like a princess. someone made me coffees all afternoon. it was excellent.

i went to town today really needing a cheer up , but knew i couldn't afford anything for me. both children needed shoes. and i saw ladys in clothes shops with arms full of clothes and i thought how lucky. then only to see them buy them with a credit card. and i thought no i;m the lucky one. when i buy something it is cause i've saved up and paid cash.

i find that if i can cheer myself up by straightening my hair putting on makeup and i feel so much better.

I'm glad you both feel a bit better, ellas & lynzpower.

Sometimes with everything going on it's so difficult to spend some time just on yourself - everything else comes first, then "me" time is a kind of afterthought, or not enough time/money/energy to bother with it.

ellas - would you swap your lovely family for a bit of a suntan & more clutter in the wardrobe?
lynzpower - congratulations on being strong enough to put the card away. And I just looked at your list at the bottom of your post - well done! Congratulate yourself on all the positive things, you have done brilliantly at cutting your debt & your monthly grocery spending!

jcr16 - cross posted with you, but well done to you too!
Have a lovely birthday! Is it today, or soon?
  • Sorry you feel so down. In my world I don't consider clothes bought in the shops as being 'new'. You don't know how many people may have tried them on before you anyway - so technically they're not new!! Plus the fact you can find just as good stuff at a car boot sale, if you get there early enough. The beauty of this is that when you're fed up of the clothes, you can resell them! I've a double wardrobe full of second hand clothes, (although I've recently re-sold a bin bag full) and people at work are always commenting on how good I look at work!

Most designer clothes only cost a few quid to produce anyway - probably in some far flung sweat shop to boot.

So go to a boot sale and have a good rummage!!
  • How come people buy into the "new clothes/makeup" image? I'm admitting I did it too, but wish I hadn't, and am doing my best not to from now on. I'm OK as I am - no makeup, clothes that keep me warm/dry/covered. My TREAT would be to walk through some woods (without wheelchair) listening to the birds or watching a pond for an hour or two with NO money worries to encroach on the thoughts/enjoyment. That's not to say I don't get depressed, but it's more often the state of the environment or people's self-centredness and disdain for others that starts me off. As Kitty points out, new clothes are sweat shop made - you don't neeeeed them!
Here's a hug to help cheer you all up, :grouphug:

When you get sufficiently down - then spending £10 or £20 on yourself is the equivalent of 'medicine'.

At my poorest, when going month after month of monotony and penny pinching got me to rock bottom in my sense of self esteem ( seeing all the monied lot ) I went and bought a Chanel lipstick. total self indulgence and not a sensible purchase. It lasted me for nearly a year, so actually it wasn't such a bad deal. I hardly ever wear make up, but when I felt poor and low, I'd go and put it on. And some very posh nail varnish I got in a sale at Debenhams. It never failed to make me feel a whole lot better about myself..

    ...don't shoot me for it!!!
  • Hi ellas0902

I have read this thread and am pleased that you are climbing out of this emotional pit.

I have been feeling pretty muh the same lately:

    • miserable,
    • 32 years old, loads of grey hear and wrinkles
    • paying off debts
    • constantly poor
    • 2 kids
    • full time work and a part time job
    • housework
    • never ending DYI bathroom, central heating etc projects my OH started nearly, er…..6 years ago
    • no friends (left)
    • no dress sense at all!

I find it extremely difficult to stay focussed when I am feeling down, but I found that the best FREE cure in a situation like this (for me) is either sleep or spending some time outdoors (preferable by myself).

We took an allotment a few months ago. What a joy to hear birds not cars, dig and plan for potatoes and strawberries!

Jam making is not completely free, but also tends to cheer me up a lot. Every time I make a few jars I feel like a proud squirrel stashing nuts for the coming winter.

I don’t know what your budget is, but I got a lovely pair of shoes for £25 reduced from £79. I had a £19 credit note for this catalogue, so effectively I only paid £6.

I hope this helps and apologise for high-jacking your thread.

    Keep your chin up!

We had a rather humiliating experience in the supermarket today.

We ran into our friends and let them know about some heavily reduced fruit and veg that was good quality. Of course we stocked up, as I have recipes and tips from OS.

We thought we were doing them a favour trying to help them save money. I feel very good when I find reduced food that I like.

He was snotty and said 'I used to work in retailing and a bargain is only a bargain if you were going to buy it at full price'. I can relate to that, but sometimes I buy something because it is cheap and it is a change. I am always open to new ideas if something is a very good price. I wouldn't buy things I didn't like or had a glut already.

Just previously, we told him we had got a new job but with less pay. I felt they were looking down on us and giving us patronising sympathy.

I am not going to change my ways, as I have been this way since the beginning of the year, when I saw OS. I do get narked at people being judgmental about how I shop.
    An average day in my life:hello: :eek::mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T :o :rotfl: :rotfl: :p :eek::mad: :beer:
