Why are his payments stopping?PasturesNew wrote: »I have a friend who is now just 2-3 weeks away from this happening. Single/male, 1-bed rented flat.... benefits stop in 2-3 weeks. Worked all his life full-time until the last 3-4 years when things changed and he's been laid off about 4x in that time. And now it's finally the end of the road .... the money's about to run out and he's bricking it!

OK, I was a bit extreme in the analogy. But what I was trying to say is that it's more acceptable for, say, a working class person who has always done manual work to take on such menial jobs than it is for someone who may have been an accountant or senior manager etc. Forcing such people into these jobs is deliberately humiliating them and in my view, not acceptable in a civilised society.
Sorry about that mate. I was a very hard working sales director some years ago. Taken over, hated the politics, started my own business in a different part of the country, ripped off , because I believed that most people had morals, silly boy I am, started something else which done OK until now. Tons in pensions, very clever, not. Tell ya what mate, and I am very experienced in my field, if it meant cleaning the streets for £300 a week I would do it.
Pensions, well private, what a laugh. The joys of a what we thought was a well funded pension is little more than a joke these days.0 -
In the US, if you're of working age and don't have kids, they just stop. Then nothing. Not sure how it works, but it's based on some payments your employer makes while you're in work.... so you get a maximum amount. I believe Obama increased the maximum amount (length of time), but even so.... when the end comes, it comes. Why are his payments stopping?

And there's nothing you can do about it.
My friend's a few years older than me, so things are unlikely to improve. You can legislate against ageism, but you can't stop it happening.

It's more likely to be £210/week (£6/hour for 35 hours). £300 would be £7.50 to £8.60/hour. Here's a random advert (first plucked off the Internet), in London, minimum wage: http://jobview.monster.co.uk/Street-Cleansing-Operatives-Job-London-London-UK-88942996.aspx (and it's not even a permanent job ... and you've missed the deadline already probably)Herbie_Hancock_I_wish wrote: »if it meant cleaning the streets for £300 a week I would do it.
£300/week, round my way (as they say) is a nice number as an experienced office manager, with qualifications and experience in finance/accounts.0
